On the Tyros 2 you could easily assign the Mod Wheel to the Leslie slow/fast effect to custom voices. The Leslie effect would have a ramp speed from slow to fast and visa-versa.

On the T4, I cannot assign the Mod wheel to the leslie effect on a custom voice;

On the White Bars Patch; the Leslie effect on the Mod Wheel goes from slow to fast instantly; no transition or in between which for me is not authentic and sounds like getting splashed in the face with water.

On the Organ Flutes screen, you can press the F4 button and the Leslie will transition nicely from slow to fast using the correct transition speed, but you cannot assign it to the Mod wheel. How are you supposed to control this during a live performance from the Main Screen? You must have the organ flutes screen up all the time. Grrrrrrr!!!!!

Has anyone had luck deconstructing the T4 Organs and creating usable custom voices that were similar to the previous Tyros models or traditional Hammond Sounds?

Hi Al...yes, I have some of the same frustrations with SA organs, although, I must say, I do love the sounds a lot (especially ProgRockOrgan!).

For Organ Flutes, I use a foot-switch for Rotary Speed change...mainly because it affects all organ flutes I have on, as in Right Hand (including layers) and also the left hand sound. It's also a lot easier than using a panel switch or a wheel.

For the SA organ Rotary Speed change that is assigned to the mod wheel, I assign it to a pedal switch...Direct Access, step on the pedal I want to assign, and use "C" and "D" buttons to pick what I want it to do...

MODULATION gives fast rotary when the pedal is pressed and held down.

MODULATION(ALT) changes the speed each time you press the switch and it stays that way until you press again.

I wasn't aware you could assign the mod wheel to Leslie slow/fast on the Tyros2's custom voices, as I never tried it....you say the method is removed on the Tyros4?

Al- I'm not sure what you mean by the F4 button but if you are referring to switching from slow to fast Rotary SP Speed (using the C screen button) the same effects can be achieved by turning the Panel DSP Variation button on (and off) ie. not needing you to always be in the Organ Flutes screen.
As far as "organs" are concerned you can get similar speed up and down effects (through pressing variation) if you set a Rotary DSP on them. If the preset DSP is not a Rotary you'd need to edit the voice in Voice Set, choose which Rotary is closest to what you want and try out the effect of turning Variation on and off. Often Rotary SP5 sounds the "best" to me (as a non organ specialist;) ).
Also note you can edit the variation speed in Voice Set if the fast speed is not exactly what you want.
Although you can't vary it on the fly (eg. via the mod wheel) at least when switched it takes time to speed up, which seems to be one of the goals you were after.

As much as your hands have to play on an arranger (playing rock organ, you often had a hand sort of spare to play the half moon switch, on arranger that hand's pretty busy playing chords), I think that multi-switch footpedal setups are perfect...

Leslie F/S is ALWAYS tasked to a footswitch in my setup. As is Variation select (with auto-fill on) and whatever the gig needs (I can create custom UPS's with different layouts for live, arranger, and studio very easily), like Registration up/down, UPR/LWR sustain, sostenuto, Breaks, you name it.

My hands are best used for playing!

It is true I can use the DSP Variation, but it is all the way on the Top Right of the keyboard and not very convenient. Like a Hammond half moon switch, I rather have the Dsp variation on the left side of the keyboard; That's where the Mod wheel is.

Why does Yamaha use the Modulation wheel to control Organ voice VOLUME?

Do Hammonds work this way? What am I missing?

My Motif 6 can do this as well. I use it all the time as it makes the B3 organ patch sound so much more real when you can hear the Leslie slowing down or speeding up.
