"I would love it if my T2 understood my rootless voicings. Being able to play in full keyboard mode and play jazzy voicings would be a blast." quote montunoman

You can play rootless chords on the T2. Yamaha has been doing that at least 10 years. There is a slight difference in the notes used on some chords.

But try:

Dm9 play FCE.

G13 play FBE.

You'll be able to see it in the chord display as well as hear it.

Scott

Scott, thanks for your reply. I thought maybe my question would get ignored among all the drama in the other thread...

Do you have to play three note voicings? Also are altered dominant chords recognized?

Because my info about rootless chords got removed on that other thread, here' s recap of the chord voicings recognized on Yamaha, Technics, Ketron, and Korg arrangers, cool but regretably not on Roland arragers. frown

Chord Recognition Modes: a1 fingered or Full Keyboard with LH voice assigned to a Piano/Organ voice and activated (sounding). cool

Select an 'acoustic jazz' style that includes walking bass.
Mute all auto accomp. "piano/organ" parts.

LH voicings

II -V - I Chord Progressions

A voicings:

F1-C2-E2: Dm7(9)
F1-B1-E2: G7(13)
E1-A1-D2: C6(9)

B voicings:

F1-G1-Bb1-D2: Gm7
E1-Bb1-D2: C7(9)
E1-F1-A1-C2: Fmaj7

* These are of course recognized in all 12 keys as well.

Thank you Scott. Did you mean to include a "G" in the Gm7 chord?

I included chords with roots in the B voicing section to demonstrate the mixed use of both root and rootless chords in a chord progression.

For those interested, I suggest learning to play, and better yet, memorize these chord progressions in all 12 keys which will then give you the ability to call them up in your playing whenever you come across this most common progression in the songs you play, especially the standards. smile

This thread, and all the responses, are EXACTLY what this forum should be, and what it is really all about. No egos, no bs, just simply the sharing of knowledge. Kudos to all. Especially Scott Y..for wanting to still assist fellow members, even though he was lambasted (even if only by implication) on other occasions for this very same help and sharing of knowledge. Takes a special type of person to rise above that and still be supportive to others.

Well said, Dennis ..it is such a pain needing to fight off the big egos and the bs, just to discuss something as basic to the professional player as rootless voicings.

Scott Yee has the knowledge, and he always comes across, both, as someone humble, and as a person who is always eager to help anyone here on SZ.

This is an awesome thread for sure.

Kudos to Scott Langholff as well, who is another humble SZ member with lots of excellent information, and is always willing to help out.

Ian
