Hi Nick, no, they have to be loaded. There's a huge number of Favourite & User slots to load styles into, plus you can overwrite Factory styles, ( though it's not something I'd do personally). I've got my favourite styles saved under Favourites, the User slots I keep free for styles I want to audition & edit, then I save them into favourites. I've got all my spare styles saved into banks of catergories ie bank of swing , a bank of waltzes etc etc . If I can't find an onboard style , I just load in one of the banks into User, go thru them, if I need to edit , Ido, then I save it to Favourite. Doesn't take all that long to load a bank. I'm guessing ,but maybe they can't be played from USB stick because of the sampler. Quite a number of people load & use samples as part of their styles, me included. I mainly use mine for Drum Sets. Currently I'm converting some of my old Ketron SD1 styles across to my Korg. They really don't work without "Live Drums". Fortunately I've been able to buy some sd2 soundfonts including Live Drum sets. Now I just need to convert them to wav, load them into my Korg & I'm set, instant Live Drums. Not as good as the original, but certainly not. bad. Can you audition or play styles directly while on the USB stick instead of having to import them first to the user user banks?
It makes life alot easier and quicker if you can plug in a USB stick loaded with styles and then just play them before having to actually load them into the onboard style user banks. - this can be done on Yamaha PSR and Tyros, it cant be done on the PA 500 or 800, so wondering/hoping this has been fixed on the PA 3?
Thanks Nick

Hi Larry, most things get loaded. No big deal, whatever you load & save get retained in memory when keyboard gets switched off. Everythings there just as I left it,when I switch keyboard back on.. Samples, edited voices , registrations, songbook get retained in memory. Midifiles can be played direct from usb stick or internal harddrive. You can choose to play individual songs or select the ones you want and play them as a jukebox selection. There's 480 Favourites Slots, 120 User Slots, the user Styles saved to these slots get retained in memory.. I can save these 600 styles to a USB Stick or internal harddrive as a complete style set, I can then load them back in, as a complete set, or individual banks or individual styles. I'm not even close to filling up my Favourites slots. I've got 100's of styles I've collected, but I don't see much point in loading them into the keyboard unless I've got a use for them. They're saved in banks of genre. As I may have mentioned previously, if I haven't got an onboard style to suit, I load in the banks of user styles to the User Slots for auditioning. My keyboard gets setup exactly how I want. It was a bit of a pain at first, because I had been used to the Yammie play from USB stick system, but once I worked out the Korg file system, I actually now prefer it. Wow...never knew that about Korg. That can be a hassle.
How about other types of files like sounds, voices, midis, registrations, etc.? Can any of these load and play directly from a USB, or must they too be loaded into the keyboard first?

Hi Nick, I'm not really familiar with the PA500, I assume it would let you overwrite also, but as you said, it's something I wouldn't be comfortable with either, I've never done it with my PA800, no need, as it had User Slots as well as Favourites slots. I can't believe there's no stock available yet. I've had mine for a couple of months now. It appears right time , right place for me. Turramurra warned me they probably wouldn't have stocks till October, I was just lucky that Newcastle had one, & they were willing to sell it. It's got a number of new styles including some new Dance stuff. Having 4 fills is great too. Hope you get to see one soon. Luv mine. So the PA 500 lets you overwrite the factory style banks as well...
Something I would never have liked to dive into by I might have to do this now because I only have 2 user style banks to play with and they are all full with good styles that I definitely don't want to throw away - hence the reason why I don't like to having to load a new style every time I want to just test it out and see if its worth keeping.
The 'favourites' folder sounds good - definitely something I'de like to have! I'm waiting so anxiously for the PA 3X to hit Australia once again, taking soooo long!!
Most shops in Sydney have a back order of 5-10 PA3X's already allocated to people.
Nick

Hello everyone, regarding the PA 500 and PA 800 been able to overwrite the factory styles in case you run out of room (Most likely on the PA 500, since the PA800 also has the Favorite section same as the PA2X that is HUGE). Yes, is possible, I have done it in BOTH, the 500 and 800, actually, also in the 2X too. Is very powerful to be able to also RE-VOICE the Factory Preset styles too, also change the STS=OTS in Yamaha lingo.... I perform most of the time on the T4, but, I do not let go my PA500, if I need a style, I make it on the PA 500, then I convert it for the Yamaha and is done. In many cases is actually faster to make Backups depending on the case of the performer, and load-Restore them and by the way, I recommend NOT to use the Compress function, this makes it to load or save much slower. As an example, I most of the time play at Senior Dances, and a fewer times I play at some private parties, this for Mexican people. The advantage of the Backup vs the SET, is that the Backup not only contains all the set data, but, like in my case, I have replaced many Factory styles that I never use, like Rap, House, etc....besides my Performances/Registrations, user Voices, on the Factory presets I have change the STS, etc......so, this is much powerful way to use the most potential on the keyboard, and I simply re-load/Restore my backup for the Ballroom or for the Mexican parties....and is done in few minutes. I did show how to use this feature to a Croatian guy that plays on weddings and use lots of User voices, samples, plus most user styles and performances, to simply use this feature and is very handy, he customized to have 2 or 3 different Backups per set, when he finish a music set, just begins the Restore backup for the second set, and after he takes a small break while is loading, his PA800 is ready to keep the party going.

Great teaching !!! And yes in the PA500/PA588, you can over-write the factory styles banks.

Thanks Rikki, That's not so bad, just different than Yamaha, and if I remember more like Technics. Writing over factory styles that you would never use is actually a plus. I would assume there is a way you could get the factory styles back? Perhaps save them first to a USB before replacing, as a backup?

Larry:
Yes, you can restore to the original Factory data, styles, etc...simply download from the Korg Web site the Musical resources for the model you want to restore and is done.
As a suggestion, I always make sure I download in my Mac/PC the current OS, Musical resources, etc. for the models I use. Also a good TIP, if you are a traveling musician (long distances or even overseas), like I told my Croatian friend, email to yourself your Backups, sets, etc. that way, if you loose your USB drives, SD cards, etc, you always can download them wherever you are, this actually prove to be a performance saver many times.
IMPORTANT NOTE, make sure you ALWAYS restore from the Model you have, meaning PA500 to PA500, NO PA500Musikant to PA500 even is the same platform, they have different internal maps, sounds, drum Keys, etc. Make sure it is like PA800 to PA800, PA2x to PA2X..... If you do not follow the proper protocol, you may Freeze (Memory) on your keyboard. I hope this helps.
