One of the great moments in movie history...

http://vimeo.com/4143597

Christopher Plummer was dubbed in the released film, but here's his own vocal track, with Charmian Carr.

From his autobiography, "In Spite of Myself":

"To further shake me up, our first recording session was upon us. Daunting is not a strong enough word to describe it. Julie and I stood side by side in a small glassed-in cubicle facing two microphones. Surrounding our prison cage sat 75 musicians like hungry jackals waiting to pounce, led by their keeper, Irwin Kostal.

Warbling softly into a mike is far more difficult than singing full out in a theatre as I was later to discover. One is much more likely to catch and collect "frogs" in the throat, whereas projecting usually gets rid of them. I tried so hard not to look like a complete basket case. Julie, sensing my nerves, took hold of my hand and held it throughout the session. It must have taken her days to recover the use of it afterwards, I had squeezed it so hard.

No matter how diligently I'd slugged away at my lessons, I was still untrained as a singer. To stay on a long-sustained note was, for me, akin to a drunk trying to walk the straight white line, whereas you can bet the very first cry that Julie let forth as she emerged from her mother's womb was in perfect pitch! Listening to the playback, there was no disputing we were on separate planets. In the end, Robert Wise managed to hire someone to take care of my elongated passages, and the balance was somewhat restored."

Bill Lee was the "someone" who was hired, and he replaced all of Plummer's singing, not just the long notes.

===

On a final note... Nigel, this limited subject block is driving me nuts! You can't put enough characters in there. This continues to be problematic!

Bill...thanks so much for posting this. By coincidence, I was looking at my Sound of Music disc last week to listen to the Edelweiss track when I noticed the version on the disc was done by a gentleman named Daryl Dragon (w/Julie Andrews).

I then went to one of the "shareware" mp3 sites and listened to tracks with Christopher Plummers name attached to them. I noticed they removed the "measures" where he choked up on the words and brought Julie Andrews prematurely.

Is there the original version of Christopher Plummer singing it (where he "chokes" on the words)? I don't have high speed so the link you referenced didn't complete for me. Is the version on that site?

Edelweiss is one of my most requested songs...and one of my most favorites!

Bill.......I forgot all about Youtube. It has all the SoM segments I wanted. And one of the questions was did Christopher Plummer do his own singing. You mentioned Bill Lee and so did the video in the beginning give him credit.

As an aside, I thought Marnie Nixon did all of Julie Andrew's vocals in all her movies. Or was she just replacing Natalie Wood in West Side Story? Anyone know?

That era of the great musicals was just that.........GREAT!

Mark, as he said, he's no trained singer but he did fine on this take.

Here is a different scene in the movie where he does crack up...

What a great song, I have played this at gigs. And one of my all-time fave movies, one of the best ever.

Bill....thanks. That's actually the one I looked at last night and the scene I was searching for. I recorded it with my sound card so now I can listen to it whenever I want.

That really was one terrific movie...well-made, well-acted, well-thought out plot, etc.

Great minds think alike!

Mark
