Telmo had heard you could convert an mp3 to a midi on the T4. If this is so, does anyone know how to do that?

The T4 converter you are thinking of is the other way around. It will play a MIDI file while it records the output of the sound engine to an MP3 file, basically just a simple internal sound recording. The conversion you seek is a whole different technology. WAV, MP3, AIFF, etc files are actual sound files or sound recordings. They may be digitized, but they are still actual sound recordings. MIDI files are nothing more than a set of instructions (program) that tell the sound engine what to do - what key was pressed when and for how long and how hard was it hit and how hard was it pressed after it hit bottom, etc. It is sort of an elaborate electronic equivalent to a paper song roll for a player piano. Both cause some other device to make a tune, but neither can be considered actual SOUND. Converting a sound file to a MIDI file requires software known as a pitch-to MIDI converter, but they do have their drawbacks and many are disappointed at their results. They seem to work best with single note tunes, as multiple tones and chords tend to confuse them. I did come across one that claims to have polyphonic capabilities, if you are interested:

Good luck !

I agree with Ted except for one little thing...

As far as I know, the T4 will play a midi file or anything you are doing on the keyboard at the time and record it to a stereo WAV file. It only records in WAV format and not in mp3. I don't think it has a mp3 converter onboard. So, you would have to take the WAV file out of the keyboard via USB stick... convert it on your computer through iTunes or your software of choice. I may be wrong but that's how I did it on the Clavinovas.

You could take an mp3 and play it while playing piano and singing over top and record all of that to a WAV. You would still have to convert it to mp3 in your computer.

On some of the older PSR models, you could convert your voice to MIDI notes but it only worked from a solo/mono source. It was fun to do but not too practical. I think it was on a PSR-2100 or 2000. It was fun to demo.

Johnathan

You are correct. I was thinking of the MP3 PLAYBACK on the T4.

My first (and so far, only) PSR is the 3000, so I was not aware that any of the PSR line ever had a pitch-to-MIDI converter. That would have been fun to experiment with.

Ted
