Bluegrass is not my cup of tea, but Earl was a kind, talented man and an innovator of the style, along with my good friend, J.D. Crowe, who is now the undisputed standard bearer.

And, what's not to like about this clip with Vince Gill, Albert
Lee, Marty Stewart and others?

Ya gotta give it to Steve Martin. He's hanging in there and trying to leverage his celebrity into more recognition and appreciation of the 5 string.

Incredible performers--every one of them.

Thanks for the link, Tony,

Scruggs contacted me in the early or middle '70's and wanted me to join the band. My dad knew who he was and thought I should go on the road with them. But, I had never heard of them as we never listened to country music in our family. So, I declined.

The clip sounds pretty good for that kind of music. I guess it would have been fun,and who knows where it could have all led.haha That's ok, I'm glad I went the way I did.

Interesting story Scott L. What instrument did he want you to play in his group? How did he know of you?

Just curious smile

I had an ad in the Internationl Musician, the publication for the musicians union. I had a listing that I played trumpet, organ, sax and drums. He never told me which instrument or instruments he was most interested in, at least not that I remember. I just really didn't want to go on the road. That was not my intention for the ad.
