I read an article in the Providence Journal about the FBI issuing a warning regarding a computer virus and then checked on line ...
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20120421/NEWS03/304219991/1066/NEWS03

I contacted a friend of mine who manages a PC network for a law firm in MA, and he confirmed that this is real, and I contacted the VP of the systems department in my former company who had read the article and checked with the people responsible for the security of the company's computer systems. Here is his response:
"This is legit. Our security guys knew about the virus but didn’t know there was going to be a deadline to have it off every machine. We are not infected. A lot of virus software may have already solved this (Norton claims to have this taken care of it). The check they recommend looks benign. Not sure how good the fix is if you are infected."

The first friend I contacted sent me this link:
http://www.dns-ok.us/

I tried it and it said my PC was NOT infected but gave a 'caveat' that the PC might be infected anyway ...

There is a site that gives step by step instructions on how to check your PC if you are running Windows XP - not sure about MACS ...
http://www.dcwg.org/detect/checking-for-dns-changer-on-windows-xp/

I have not tried this yet ...

I do not want to start unnecessary panic, so perhaps some of the more savvy computer folks here could provide further info or advice ...

I have no idea as to how many of the general public will be affected by this, but I figured a "word to the wise" might help ...

You may also want to inform friends and family ...

Best of luck,

I wouldn't worry too much, the virus is quite old now but the problem is that some computers were infected and the owners are not aware of it. Originally the surrogate servers were going to be shut down in march, but they have been kept open until July to give people a chance to sort their systems.

If you have the virus then you obviously need to get rid of it as your computer will be slow and vulnerable.

The link you gave ( http://www.dns-ok.us/ ) is fine to use. But it only checks for this specific problem, you should always use a reputable anti-malware/anti-virus program.

I would think the Service Providers should have been out in front of this, alerting their customers to the problem and providing means to detect and eliminate if necessary ...

I hope AVG Free is good enough to prevent any problem ...

There is quite a bit of information on the net about it, and if you are worried, go to your antivirus manufactures support page and type the problem in, (DNS Changer) and you will find full details of how to check for it, and how to delete it. (If you have kept your security program up-to-date it should have blocked it as it has been known about for quite some time, however it’s always good to double check in case it got through early on)

Another option is to run a check from a boot disc before the system starts; a good free one comes from AVG and can be downloaded here

WARNING: This affects PCs; MACS & LINUX computers, so don’t get complacent just because you are NOT running Windows.

Above all don’t panic
