Yes, having Karma run from the keyboard's own buttons is optimal. But that is an apparent no-go. All I'm saying is, if the choice is between a laptop and a controller surface, and no Karma AT ALL, surely you can see the point of a laptop?

Personally, whether a soloist or in an ensemble, the capabilities that Karma adds (jeez! you bought a $3000+ keyboard to get it!) ought to outweigh setting up a few more bits of kit?
