Hammond Organ Drawbar registrations

Now that I have all these drawbars on the KORG PA3x I found this interesting website with some suggestions on how to set up your drawbars for different scenarios. cool2

If you serious about using the drawbars, my reccomendation is don't get involved in the science...jsut learn to 'feel' the combinations. Treat the drawbars like a Graphic Equalizer with Bass - Mid and High frequences (and all the bits in between) and adjust as you the music takes you. Listen to some well known artists in the field of music you want to play and get the sound in your head. Definately don't overly concern yourself about number crunching! You don't need to understand the science to know Jimmy Smith used 888000000 or 888888888...you can just tell.

Tone Wheel exactly....but it is interesting info,
My first Hammond M100 gave me a start & then my B3 with a
147 Leslie made me alot of money on stage years ago.
The sound is legendary & to me nothing comes close.

I had an M102, Donny. It came with this very retro looking book showing some drawbar settings for this, that and the other. I don't think I glanced at it more than twice. Then, as now, in my ears I trust.

Donny

Thanks for the link. I too played the B3/122 in the seventies and eighties, but got away from it because I couldn't find it's equal. With the Audya and Neo-Vent, I have regained my passion, and find the site a good refresher, although I agree that using your ears thereafter is the best way.

since this topic came up here's an old post I put in the Buy/Sell forum.
I would like this stuff to go to someone who appreciates Hammonds like I do.
Hammond Organ memorabilia thats just taking up room since I moved. A couple of registration books, about 25 Hammond Times magazines, some sales folders, original owners certificates, a 1950's Hammond Oil can (empty) and a notebook with a collection of Hammond articals from Keyboard Magazine , etc.
I used a bunch of this stuff for a great display in my old studio.
$25 plus shipping

Thanks

Different Hammonds had different power to each drawbars, so you never could use identical settings and get identical results. The T series sounded different to the B's and C's, and things started to get even further away when Hammond went with the X's...

Then most modern clones (and especially the drawbar sections in WS's and arrangers) got even further away from the original... Not to mention that running the Hammond through a nice big Leslie gave it a huge low end bump that is hard to get an arranger to do.

Just use your ears...

Nothing condescending in there, TWD. Just good advice.

Diki: I think all of us who were Hammond grinders back in the day are more than well aware of the shortcomings of arrangers now, and for the foreseeable future. Not just in the sound, but in the tactile department as well. I guess if you don't want to be hiring a team to schlep one of those ol' beauties around, we have to live with the status quo.

Robaxacet, anyone? laugh

One thing I don't miss is being at the bottom end of schlepping a B3 up some outside steel stairs in a club in England after a snow shower! I told the guys at the top end, if they let it go, just leave it there as my headstone!

I REALLY wish someone would come out with an up-to-date B3 module. Nord stopped making them after the Electro Rack, and they have considerably improved the Electro since then. Ditto Hammond, who haven't brought their B3 module up to date for over six years. I've read about this http://www.keyborgan.com/products/expander/ but it seems a very rare beast over here, and is a bit pricey for a one-trick-pony. It's a shame KeyB couldn't come out with a single drawbar set one that is practical to sit on a keyboard's top surface.

Have to admit, it sounds great, but the form factor is just clunky.
