My 7000 has died. All that fires up is the blue light and the red floppy disk light. My local service technician has not been able to trace the problem.
If anyone has had a similar problem, and been able to rectify, I would appreciate any advice.

Be sure your technician has keyboard experience. I have not had that specific problem, but the most common failure that would affect the entire keyboard is a power supply problem. Power supply problems can usually be fixed with generic parts. If you do not already have a service manual, download the copy that is here on Nigel's site and get it to your service technician. I believe Bill Norrie also has a copy on his site.

Many thanks Bob for responding. The service agent is the main provider of keyboard service for all makes including Technics, and has been established for many years. Though he admits that he could not trace the fault, and has had the keyboard for 16 months on the hope that another one would come into his workshop and then he could compare, however, this unfortunately has not happened...so keeping my fingers crossed. regards Jim

Excuse me... but am I reading this correctly has had the keyboard for 16 months on the hope that another one would come into his workshop and then he could compare..... not much of a technician in my opinion and am sure others would agree

Did the technician check the power supply already?
The first thing the technician should do is to check the power supply voltages: +Vcc, -Vcc, +15V, -15v, +5V and +3,3V. These voltages can be checked on the FAJ pcb, refer to the servicemanual FAJ 2/2 circuit diagram. It looks like the +5V is o.k. because the blue light and the FDD light do lit and these are powered directly by +5V.
If one or more voltages are not correct it can be caused by a defective component in the power supply itself or by a too heavy load and thus activating the overload protection. This can be checked by disconnecting the connectors that distribute the voltages to the other boards.

Great advice

I took my 7000 to a tech, here in Florida, a few years ago for a speaker problem. He went all over it and told me that the power supply was running pretty warm, and even if it was normal, chances are that it will be one of the first things to go after the pads.

Jim, none of us can diagnose a problem from so many miles away. One thing is fairly certain, the only reason for the technician to delay working on the keyboard while waiting for another to show up for comparison would be a total lack of reference material. If he has the service manual available, he should certainly be able to isolate the source of the problem with relatively little effort.

Thank you all. I have to admit that I am a little taken back with the technicians inability to locate the problem, given that his business is long established, been the recognised service agent for Technics ( amongst all the other brands) for the whole of south east Queensland Australia for years. I have purchased a service manual and have asked one of my Son's who is a computer IT engineer to try and identify the problem for me. I also see that in the Old Country there is a Mike Barden that specialises in repairing Technics, so I guess that is another string to my bow, even though I am downunder. I will pass on Bert's comments to my son also. thank you ever so much all of you for responding, given my age, and the fact that I am now somewhat incapacitated, my keyboard has become more of my life so to speak. regards Jim
