I've been music director and all-around electronics and music guy for my parish for the last 41 yrs. This year our parish merged with another. My boss says to me - come the end of September we'll announce your retirement, call you up front and give you a nice gift..."

Now, I do not qualify for a pension or anything like that. I also don't want to stop playing and will probably look for work elsewhere. So, is that "retiring?" Could I collect unemployment even though my hours are considered part-time? I'm 63 and healthy enough to continue playing.

Sorry to hear this Cass. The cause for this probably has more than one dimension. You said two Parishes have merged. If finances were an underlying cause for this move, you can see where paying one and not two directors would save money. Why they picked the other person I can't say. Possible age discrimmination? Eh, have fun proving that, buddy.

It may time to put the word out, exit gracefully stage left and move onto your next challenge.

Good luck...

Hi Cass, going by the limited response, maybe the question is too hard!!!
Although I don't know how much simpler it could be?
Seriously though, I understand how disappointed you must be.
Not too old to start a new career. Maybe a "ROADY " for Mr. Lay (Captain Russ). No!!! I want that job when I'm too old for anything else!!

They are clearly "eliminating" your position. How have you been paid- cash, check, sacramental wine? I 'm sure they are a non-profit or not-for-profit organization and don't pay taxes. I would be surprised, if it's not required, that they pay unemployment tax to the state/federal government. If not, they can't pay toward an unemployment claim. Of course you reported your earnings.......
