I just spent a couple hours listening to one of my favorite singers..Joni James..

Her arrangements..From trios to her 100 string albums..

Then I made an eye opening mistake...I played the "great" Tyros5 demos.....Talk about putting things in perspective...I think we all can benefit from listening to the real "great" music..

It reinforces my opinion to keep arranger simple..as in combos, and not to over do it....it just does not sound like the real thing...

I just got the 950 and was taken back by the busy styles. They sounded very cluttered and unusable (75%) to me.

Jim, just use the lower variations, which are not nearly as busy, or turn off the stuff you don't want to hear. I live the S-950 styles, personally, but that's why there's vanilla and chocolate. Of course, much of this is song dependent as well. Some songs, obviously, need just a bass and a good singer and that's it, while others need the entire orchestra.

Watch who you're callin old, Dave - you resemble that remark! wink

Cheers,

Gary cool

A classic example of how a great singer only needs simplistic backing to sound really great. Nothing more than a slap bass, piano and a light touch of brass.

Good music is GOOD music ... no matter when it was created. The good stuff will stand the test of time, and the garbage will fall away pretty quickly.
If you play mostly classic, million sellers (even in your own style)... you will have a great response from your audience.
