Hi Mark, the sounds on the expansion boards are not rearranged onboard sounds but are new and different samples,I checked this out with Panasonic before buying the 4 expansion boards,as a Technics Dealer and TMA music school principal I checked with the technical dept. not the Sales office, not saying my local area rep would mislead me.The one thing about the PCM/NX sound systems in that you can edit them you can create sounds from one sample to sound much like another preset, don't forget this was also very true with the 4 and 6 operator FM system used by Yamaha in the DX synth range and HX/HS/HE Electone organ ranges back in the 1980's. there they even issued expansion voice ram packs (FM-01vp) if I remember correctly with 128 extra voices which again were created from new basic voice data, but which with a LOT!! of time and practice could be made by the owner if so desired ( not worth the hassell!! I was a Yamaha multi keyboard specialist for 5 Years and used both HS and DX products as a pro recording artist) As you said it is a mater of choice, but having worked for the top 2 makers and a dealer for both I know that I can say with over 30 years in the trade both makers had fantastic products and I found the Technics system much more friendly.
Best regards John.
Gear used Hammond T202/H112/B200 plus Leslie speakers,Yamaha HS8+ DX etc,Technics GN9/KN1000,2000,7000.
