Whenever I'm contacted for a playing gig or any of my day work, I visit the venue (or business) and watch:
* How the management treats the employees. * How the customers treat the employees.
I make my decision based on how people are treated.
Once, I was contacted by a private new "snoot" club, located at the top of a bank. The "entertainment chairman" called to ask me to work (I had been recommended by several of the founding members, whom I knew), and began to describe all the rules (come thru the back door, don't address the members unless they talk first, don't sit with members unless invited....all that junk).
I laughed, pulled out my membership card (corporate-I wouldn't have voluntarily paid money to be a part of this circus), dropped it on the table and left.
JERKS!

The famous pianist, Horowitz, who was booked to play a super high society gig. When asked his fee, he responded, $2,000.00. Fine, said the hostess, but admonished him not to mingle with the guests. He responded, "In that case, the fee is $1,000.00". chas That was so good......I fell out of my seat laughing!
