I had the opportunity to play an MOX8 while in the Florida Keys - the piano sounds were absolutely awesome - probably the best of any synth I've heard. Of course, it helps if the guy playing the keyboard knows how to play the piano, which I DO NOT! When the guy that owned it played a bit of Floyd Kramer's Last Date, it was the best of the best performances - he was pretty amazing. That said, I need more than that from my arranger, and while that MOX8 sounded great, it was a pain to work through the settings to get it ready for the next song. Lots of buttons to push, and his dead time between songs approached 3 minutes when things were gelling. I like the ease of navigation I now enjoy with the S-950 and all the predecessor arrangers I've owned in the past. Good Luck, Gary

I think a lot of the more forward looking arranger players here have lamented the lack of arpeggiator features on arrangers (the two are quite different). Until someone finally melds the two together, neither does the job of BOTH.
The thing about arps on a WS that differs the most from an arranger is that EVERYTHING must be cued a bar in advance. We all have got very used to the system that, when we ask for a fill, we get it IMMEDIATELY, in time with the music. Ask for it on beat 2 or 3, you get it to drop in on beats 2 or 3.
But workstation arp players, AFAIK, even if you have an arp fill (not a whole lot of fills in most of the factory content!), if you ask for it on beat 2 or 3, you either get nothing until beat one of the NEXT bar, or you get the arp playing the second you ask for it, but it starts on the one of the fill, whether the arp player plays it on the one or not...
In a way, it's like Intro and Ending divisions, or calling Variations without a fill... fine if you call them up in advance. Not so fine if you want them in the middle of a bar!
Adding this one simple element (starting an arp on the beat that it is asked for, in the middle, that is) to WS arp players would allow us to use them as arrangers fairly easily, especially if these one-shot arps (that's what a fill is) are allowed to have a destination arp so that a particular fill/arp goes to another arp which is the next Variation in arranger-speak.
Until they do, though, you have to change HOW you play quite considerably.

I don't know about other brands, Diki, but with Yamaha you have an option to either have the fill come instantly, or have it wait till the next beat. Gary

Dave, I did not know that. How do I change that setting on the Pa900?

UD, I looked and looked through the manual and the keyboard and cannot see it, but then my wife tells me I can't see something unless it's right in front of my nose.

Some of it is quite cool... Call me a pop addict, but I can't help myself from smiling and bouncing along to 'Get Lucky' (Daft Punk), I love Bruno Mars (looking forward to his Superbowl stint), Katy Perry's 'Roar', even Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines'..!
Sure, I got a deep side, but I don't let that stop me from enjoying something simple, silly, and pure ear candy! Just don't watch the videos, simply LISTEN and most of this stupid kid culture stuff melts away.
Don't ever grow up! The NH's can do just fine without me, LOL

I'm afraid my only experience with NH's will be as a resident...hopefully not for many, many years. It takes a very special skill (and personality) to play those places successfully...I don't have it. A man's gotta know his limitations. I'm on a Country Music kick this month...my buddy, Johnny, with the new Tyros5-76 is a terrific Country piano player...I'm in total "observing and learning" mode when I'm at his place. It's the old Country tunes I really like playing...most always "less is more", or as my friend Johnny says, "Sprinkle a little pie-anna over the top!" The Tyros5 (and Tyros4) has a wicked pedal steel...we must have done a hundred variations on "Sleepwalk", plus we played every pissin' and moanin' Country tune we could think of. Ha Ha! Not a lot of really pro arranger players nearby, so it's great to have someone in the same area with much the same musical interests and playing the same type keyboard. It's too bad that more of us here on SZ don't live within a reasonable distance of each other. I figure I'm never too old to learn and never too old to be young. Ian Or, as Red Green (from Canada's Red Green TV show) says, "If I can't look young...at least I can be immature."

Diki, I have to say it again...I agree! over the years, there have been happy, catchy tunes that were PLAIN FUN! Not much structure or even depth of meaning, but GREAT FUN!
Even the Grammy's as a whole. Some have said they wouldn't(or didn't) bother watching, but among the crap, a few jewels. And, lets face it, that is state of the art pop these days.
The instrument Stevie Wonder played at first is interesting. Our friend Rory Hoffman was a demo guy for them for a while.
And, given that much emphasis on the recognition of an outstanding music educator, while stiffing our friend Dave, was a bright spot for sure.
I come across as so serious, sometimes, but would probably be banned for awhile if I told you how much silly, plain FUN I've had over the years playing!
R.
