The Baltimore I grew up in... has really changed over the years. The photos here are still vividly etched in my mind.

Enjoy,

Been to baltimore a few times with a dutch navy ship, just loved the place... With our ship in the old harbour directly in front of the philips bar.. And later on Hooters..

Place i have most fond memmories of, a country bar named : The horse i came in on..

I allways enjoyed being in Baltimore..

Donny, Baltimore's Inner Harbor and Little Italy are the showcase areas of the city. The remainder is a war zone where at least one murder takes place every night, especially the northwest side of town. When I was a kid, which I realize was about the same time that John Paul Jones joined the Navy, you could go anyplace in Baltimore and felt pretty safe. I used to ride a trolly (street car) to Carlin's and Gywnn Oak amusement parks and go on the rides all day long, which back then cost .50 cents. I took the same street car to Gwynns Falls and went fishing for smallmouth bass and bluegills - today the same stream is so polluted that touching the water would be dangerous, but additionally, if you ventured out of your car there would be a good chance that you would be mugged, robbed and likely shot by roving street gangs. The drug trade in Baltimore is off the charts, while the politicians are more crooked than the criminal element. There's a valid reason I no longer play music in Baltimore's Inner Harbor and Little Italy. Looking at those old photos really brought back some fond memories, but they also brought a tear to my eyes when I think of the wanton destruction that has taken place in that once charming city.

Donny, I'm fortunate in that I have an escape mechanism. I just put up the sails and REALLY get away from it all.

Seems the american way has its shadowsides, in a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer every day... For most there is nothing left to dream about...

Bachus, every way of life has it's shadowsides - it's nothing unique to this part of the world, and having traveled much of the globe when I was younger, I can say that with some degree of authority. There were places in Barcelona, Rome, London, Tokyo, Lisbon, Johannesburg, Rio and Key West that I didn't feel very safe in 55 years ago. Times have changed because the attitude of people have changed - it's a very different world we live in today. Fortunately, there are still many caring individuals that help make living worthwhile.

I remember when I took a train from Trenton, NJ, to the Washington D.C. region in 1985, I saw Baltimore from a kind of long train bridge, and it looked a bit like a neighborhood of small huts, very poor, almost like slums. Do I remember it correctly? Probably it was just the worst part of the city, close to the railway track...
