Hello to everyone, hope all is well?
I know that this question has been answered before, but I can't find it, I would like to know any suggestions on a video camera that records LIVE and records sound that doesn't distort? as always bang for the buck would be a plus and maybe HD?

thanks

Most video cameras with XLR inputs will give a good sound. I use a Canon XH A1(mini DV)for video when I want to record good sound.

I mount a Rode condenser mike on my XH A1 and run that into the camera.

Most video cams will produce good video...few produce a good sound with it. Even the built in mike on my XH A1, which is better than most, will not produce as good a sound as an external mike.

Ironically, the expensive cameras cost the money they do because they can produce good sound.

Look around for a used video camera with XLR inputs.

Best of luck.

Rog

One other option..but not as good as a video camera with XLR inputs...

I also have a Canon 5DIII that I occasionally mount a small condenser mike on when I want better sound than the built in mike. The Canon 5DIII is a great camera but can't do sound wise what my Canon XH A1 can do with the quality of music sound.

You can buy less expensive DSLR cameras(i.e. Canon Rebel) that record HD video. However, without an external mike...the sound is not the best.

And when I say sound...voice is no problem for most cameras..it's the quality of the sound of the music that suffers with less expensive cameras.

If I was doing videos that I wanted a good music sound on I would look for a used video camera that had XLR inputs so I could mount a good mike to it.

Here's a link on Ebay...not sure of the quality of the used cameras but it's worth a look.

Sometimes you can find a good used one in a camera store.

Again, best of luck.

Thanks! but I read somewhere some kind of cameras in a few hundred that were made just for this? I think they had stereo mikes on them too? I don't remember the brand?

I use Kodak ZI8 camera. It has decent mics, but I always use the line inputs and record sound directly from mixer for unsurpassed quality. If anything, I got this one a little hot, but that is user error.

Don,

Nice video...good sound. I see a guitar there. Do you use that too?

Van,

I can record stereo on my XH A1 by using two mikes and both XLR inputs.

To get a stereo sound for the video though I have to split the tracks(haven't done that much) with a photo/video software program.

Are you trying to get stereo sound in your video? Or are you looking to improve sound?

Here's a link to a video I did a few years back using two mikes run simultaneously into my XH A1. I didn't try to get a stereo sound...just a larger sound.

I use the Sony Vegas video editing software (home version) it is very simple to take a video and replace the audio track. Synchronising audio to video is not that hard. you can nudge things one frame at a time if necessary.

I'm sure this will be the case with other video editing software.

If your situation allows you to record the audio separately direct off a desk (to one of those little two-track digital recorders perhaps?) I'd go for this every time.
