Some folks make midi files available for other folks to use; some will provide style files on the net.

I sort of understand the difference between midi and style files but what's the advantage of downloading a midi file over a style file, or vice versa?

Whereas a style is a repetitive beat with variations, a midi file is a sequenced song from start to finish. You can mute parts you want to play yourself, and play along with it.

I use midi files that were made for specific songs that are difficult to play with styles and sound authentic.

Just to add: A midi file does not react to any chord changes played with your left hand, its chords are fixed from beginning to end of the song. So the advantage is that you can use the left hand for more interesting things than just playing the chords, but the disadvantage is that the midi file can only be used for one specific song, and the sequence is fixed.

but while the sequence is 'fixed' if you KB has the function, you can place 'markers' at different places in the midi file so you can extend the song, shorten it, whatever suits your purpose at the time ...

That all depends upon the midi file and the keyboard. Many keyboards do not have the ability to set markers and restart a midi file.

For the most part, I do not use midi files at all. The constraints of a midi file are such that I find style files offer a much greater advantage to the performer, allowing him or her to shorten, extend of modify any song they happen to be working with. Yes, you can make custom midi files, but you can also make custom style files as well.
