I like the man, pianoman chuck, he has many worthwhile videos around sharing his knowledge and opinion..

Tough on the most popular piano forum he is not very popular, some of his opinions are not shared overthere...

Finally we can take our keyboards outside to the campfire..

I purchased a 1,500-watt modified sine-wave inverter for my boat, that will easily run my keyboard and amp for hours on end. Of course, the boat batteries consist of 4 T-105 golf cart batteries in a series parallel rig and a 400-ampere hour 12 volt battery. I can run an awful lot of stuff with this much power available.

interesting... could be an option when gigging at a garden party or bbq.. Not many can play where there is no power, it would set you appart from the rest..

But then the question is, what does it weight?

The inverter weights about three pounds. You could just lift the hood of your car, connect it with a set of jumper cables, and go to work.

how does that affect the car battery while you are drawing juice off it?

It depends upon how much power your equipment draws, Tony. The unit itself draws just 600 mili-amps, which is next to nothing.

Lets assume that you are using my setup, which draws about 200-watts total power. 200-watts at 120 volts equates to 1.6 amps. The average car battery provides about 120 ampere hours of power before going flat dead. At this rate, you could play for several hours without effecting the battery. However, you must keep in mind that you are operating on 12 volts DC, which would equate to about 16 amperes of drain per hour. You could still get several hours of playing time before having to start the car and recharge the battery. The car's alternator usually puts out about 50 amps, therefore, it would not take very long to recharge the car battery and keep things going. In fact, you could even play while the car charges the battery and have no ill effects from this. When I performed the music for a barefoot wedding aboard the couple's houseboat, I ran my system from a 3,500-watt inverter, which after three hours, the boat batteries were still doing just fine, and this was on just a single battery.

All the best,

Gary cool
