Paul Desmond had a very soft alto sax sound that was unique due to the air (breath) tonal quality. The following might be considered in getting close to his sound.

Bring up PROGRAM MENUS.

Click on SOUND EDIT

Click on TONE

Under SOLO, 1st should be ON

GROUP I, TONE NAME: Vib. Alto Sax, LEVEL 116

SOLO 2nd, 3rd and 4th should be OFF

Use the side button and click SOLO 2nd ON and bring up GROUP M

In GROUP M, find WHITE NOISE. Bring LEVEL to 15.

The LEVEL can go higher than 15 to perhaps as much as 22 if you want more air escaping around the tone. Personally, I wouldn't go higher than 15.

SOLO 3rd and 4th should remain OFF.

Don't forget to name and save the sound. GOOD LUCK.

nsr007 - does the kn7000 have the "soft alto soloist" voice which I have on my kn6?... I haven't tried 'tweaking' it yet, but that's one of my next projects...

Yes. The Vib. Alto Sax is taken from the Soft Alto Solist. Just follow the further steps and you should come up with the sound.

By my posts, you probably know that I recently got my KN7000. It was converted from a UK model to a US model. I am still in the middle of transferring files and setting up new Panel Memories. Most of my time is working in COMPOSER but give me some time and I will. I'd be interested in your Sound Group.

Scott ... I tried it on my kn6 last night and it worked fine ... For my taste, I actually had the 'White Noise' at a lower level ... I think that if the white noise would fade out even though the note was still playing it would sound even more realistic...
There is a song of Mr. Desmond's named "Wendy" that I play using the Soft Alto ... I will try to record it and post it here ...

While I am in my new 'discovery and learning' mode with my kn6 (even though I have had it forever, seems like), what does the 'portamento' effect do? ... I played around with that as well last night, but couldn't 'hear' anything...

highlight 2nd, go to amplitude page 2, reduce sus2 to zero and make dcy2 60 to 70 to taste, the "noise" will fade while the note still plays.

Portamento provides a continuous glide in pitch between one note and the next. Turn it on for a sustain voice, set at time 50 and play a note then the octave above and you will get the exaggerated effect.

I listed a LEVEL 15 to make it heard easily. I agree bringing it down a bit makes it even better. Technicsplayer said it well for the fade and explaining PORTAMENTO.

So far, I haven't gone near the SD card usage. I haven't had reason to, yet. I have the CD, as well as the SD-Jukebox V2.4 and the USB reader/writer. I shutter to think about it.

While we are on the topic of sounds. I discovered the following several years ago on the KN6000 and it can be done on the KN7000.

Bring up TRUMPET SOLOIST and push your MODULATION WHEEL all the way up. You will hear a very beautiful muted trumpet. It sounds very well on songs as, "Dream" or "At Last" with a slow big band tempo.

John, since you are fond of trumpet sounds, you might especially like this. I haven't tried to save this in SOUND EDIT and I should.
