Got to the end of a nice hour and fifteen minute set today. Went over my scheduled time to end and folks said "One More Please".

So I asked, how about a sing along? Sounds good was the reply.

So I told them we were doing This Land Is Your Land.

Could I get the melody? No.

I've done this song a thousand + times. But I had changed the pitch and style and hadn't rehearsed...didn't think I had to. After about three futile attempts, I got it.

Early senility?

In the end it worked. But it was the first time I can remember(or in this case couldn't remember) forgetting how a tune goes.

The gig went well overall. Several asked for my card saying we want you back.

Still, it was a bit strange, forgetting a melody line. Usually, those never escape me.

It's old age. I'm suffering all kinds of musical mishaps these days (which is why I stopped gigging regularly). Biggest problem - staying in time with very up-tempo tunes (ex. 'Cherokee' at 280 bpm). I try to practice it with a drum machine (BK7m or Alesis Pro 10) to insure beat fidelity and find that I'm having a harder and harder time keeping up. Slow and medium tempo - no problem.

Another problem i'm starting to develop is missing the fingering on exotic or rarely used chords. Also missing notes in fast 'riffs' in solos, etc. So far, no problem remembering tunes (changes) but I'm sure that's next. Oh well, beats being dead.....I think.

How do you know? wink But, if you find out for sure, please let me know.

I have had to drop several songs if I want to hit the high note at the end...Crying, My Way, Trilogy, Unchained Melody, I Will Always Love You, etc.

Yeah, QuitPic:

Get ready for more... I stopped calling it "Maturity" some time ago... now I call it "Manurity!" LOL! Makes me very grateful I don't even attempt to perform in public.
