For over a year, I have been leaving $20.00 a week with the owner of a college diner, to use to feed a homeless guy who lived somewhere in the area. He had mental problems, so getting to know him was impossible.
I bought him a guitar to replace the one he carried. It was damaged beyond use by the wind, rain, etc.
The owner of the place would tell him that a "friend" and fellow musician wanted to buy his meal, and doled the money out, plus added "in kind" food. He and his family go out of their way to hire the homeless and feed them when they can.
The guy froze to death behind a nearby liqueur store several nights ago....bottle in hand.
I feel awful I didn't try harder to help. Didn't even know his name until I read it in today's paper.
Sad. Sad. Should not happen in this country (or any country, for that matter). Obviously we can't save everyone but that shouldn't discourage us from doing what we can.
