Found out the Director of the school I cover for is gone second half of next week. I have two gigs scheduled second half of next week.

Director may be right about asking me to cover or may hav thought she asked me to cover but spaced it off. I've got a 12 year working relationship with her.

Bottom line, since the educational job pays 2 1/2 times what the gigs do and I have loyalties to both, I chose the ed. job.

Thoughts?

Seriously, that's a tough call ... I assume YOU forgot that you would cover? ... If you agreed to that prior to booking the gigs, that's where your obligation lies ...
Hopefully, you have a good enough relationship with the gig venues that you can get a suitable replacement without doing any harm to your reputation and your credibility ...

Tough call but the ED is a lot more secure than the playing gigs. That's why years ago I became a teacher instead of a full time musician. Go for the security and better $$$.
What would happen if you got sick or hurt and had to cancel those gigs? Would they be there when you returned?

Mmmmmm, not always. In my case, it was the opposite. Teaching was my "Plan B" just to change things up a bit. Sometimes, you just need a different perspective. My life on stage has paid the bills, educated my kids, and kept me sane ... or at least, as sane as an artist can be! lol
Plus ... I hear there's little blue pills for that whole ED thing. (Can't comment from personal experience, of course) wink

You have to be open and honest... What did the Schooldirector say when you confronted her with the fact that you have other appointments? Does she have alternatives?

i dont think cancelling your gigs is honest to the people that hired you, they are counting on you, unless you have an alternative for them and hook them up to another musician.

Cancelling gigs to many times can really hurt your reputation.

Tx for the responses all.

First off, the activities people I'm in contact with have known for months that I would not be available to play at some point in the near future...due to my hip replacement.

I have turned down teaching assignments because I was committed to playing. Also, it's very possible this administrator did contact me some time back and I goofed up my schedule.

With gigs, I'm lucky, around here, to make enough to pay for the equipment.

I'm at sort of a crossroads.

After my hip is replaced, I don't know if I'll do either the music or teaching....depends on how I feel. I enjoy both but especially with the music, I don't think I would take on gigs anymore unless I made more money.

Tx again all for the comments.
