Met a new friend...an accordion player...mid 70's maybe. He is very good on the accordion but also owns an older Ketron, an XD9 and a Yamaha PSR3000.

We jammed away the afternoon today. He on his accordion and me on his XD9. Fun. I played the PSR3000'a bit as well.

The XD9 has some nice styles and voices for an older keyboard. Very nice sound overall coming from the on board speakers.

But what I was most impressed with was the XD9 feel and action....definitely a step above.
It would be fun to play a newer Ketron some day.

I'm new to arrangers within the past 6 years or so.

But one thing is starting to stand out for me in regards to Yamaha PSR arrangers(PSR 710, 750, 950, now 970 I own)...voices and styles are good. However, keyboard action is toylike.

As I mentioned, I played a PSR3000 today and own the PSR S970. After playing that Ketron and Korg PA 4....PSR's feel more toylike...as I've said.

My Tyros 4 had a nice keybed feel.

If someone like me with little experience can feel a difference, how do others with years of experience feel?

Some people prepare lighter keys... almost toylike...

I think its the less advanced players like you and me that take to a heavier keyaction much more, as that seems to give us more controll over our performance..

i stay away from the ultra light keybeds of the psr-s keyboards

however many others here just dont seem to mind it, and even prefer it for getting less fatigue during long playing sessions.

In the end i guess its more about what you are used to, as long as you only play the psr-s keybed, you will not notice how incredibly light the touch is.

I agree, the psr keys don't feel as nice as the Tyros or Audya. But I can adapt just fine. I'm not playing any Rachmaninoff, just just popular songs. I use my arranger keyboard to back up my vocals , leads and simple improvisations. If I were a virtuoso , I probably wouldn't be playing an arranger keyboard.

Bachus,
You don't have to get paid to tell others in something you believe in and own.
I own two Ketron SD7s and it is without any reservations THE BEST KEYBOARD I HAVE EVER OWNED! To put this in perspective, I started with the PSR3000, then Tyros 3, then Tyros 4, Also Roland E50 and E80, also korg PA1x Pa2X-Pro, and the PA4X. I have gigged with all of them. Without a doubt the SD7 far surpasses these keyboards in what I need for my gigs and what my audiences are telling me is the best sound they have heard from me.

So, like the other poster, I too will recommend to others to take a serious look at the SD7. I can't speak for the SD9-Pro because i don't own one.

Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth.

Deane

In my limited experience, I can see where you are coming from.

Can you even get Ketron in the US?

I was just kidding, dutch humor... just remembering Donny's hands on experience with the SD7

Offcourse one can be very enthousiast over instruments you own, have owned or simply played a lot... for me just touching one briefly or only seeing it on youtube often times is enough.. and luckily everyone has its own opinion, or there would be no discussions left..

I dont think any of the pro keyboards created can be called bad or even average, they are all above average up to spectacular good...

I think i do understand why you like your sd7 as you have explained to us quite well on some ocasions... to me where it comes to spectacular keyboards, sd7 is right up there with the tyros5 and the pa4x...

Overhere in europe, we have a company to rebuilds any high emd keyboard into a duall accordeon board with knobs...

And yes, i think next up is a totl arranger with an option to buy 88 key graded hammer action... as i said before, here in europe the youngsters come from pianno lessons backgrounds and just want 88 keys.. and a collection of more modern build in styles...

many times my opinions were based on using the kb day after day in and out performing hundreds of shows a year, speed weight ease of use is imperative......that said if your not performing out your needs will certainly change and be different and you'd probably choose a different kb for home or studio use where portability isn't an issue,...Ketron arranger units will fill that bill very efficiently..and sound amazing.

Doesnt everyone have its own wants and needs?

Choosing a new keyboard is mostly a trade off ... but in the end, we are quite lucky that all keyboards are far above average these days..
