Not sure where but I have heard that Ketron doesn’t use compression to produce final output. That it’s sound is uncompressed.

True?

Data compression? Or Audio compression?

With a Yamaha Motif, they had only so much space for waveform ROM with the computer parts the used to build the machine. To get all the data in the memory, they used data compression.

Audio compression can get more “punch” from the audio... or prevent it from distorting.

Very good question, i asume they mean audio compression simds that ofen is added at the end of the chain... and he is talking about the output...

Data compression comes in two sorts, non losless compression like we know from the mp3’s.. but there is also aiff which is lossless compression and is exactly the same quallity as uncompressed audio...

The question however needs clarification...

When I heard this comment, I believe it was referring to audio compression.

What I think of here is similar to the kind of compression that I would add to the end of the signal chain when mixing a final song during recording. Hard to explain but compression gave me a louder sound not necessarily a richer sound.

Compression of this sort pushes all sounds in a style to maximum volume and dynamics are at a minimum.

Again, I heard that Ketron does not compress the sound at the final output.

This is probably just a trivial issue...but I am curious if anyone knows anything.

Audio Compression is the process of lessening the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. This is done by boosting the quieter signals and attenuating the louder signals.

So now the question, when do you use audio compression and when not?

No Audio compression. Mainly DSPs used at output (which user can edit).
