Just random thoughts on the subject:

Whenever I get a new kb I set up a generic rhythm/style bank of the most used beats that I need. The idea came from a Roland Card that is about 30 yrs old for the E series. I think Fran still has one .... it was called EZ-8.
To be fair, I play a great deal more than these 8 beats, but as a generic, quick start for a myriad of requests, they are a great stating point. Maybe they'll be of some help to some of you, as well.
(This is based on a setlist for US audiences ... because that's what I know) smile

1) 8 beat - standard 4/4 good for ballads, and light rock
2) 16 beat - adds that R&B feel to a straight 4/4 - works great for ballads
3) Shuffle - ala Kansas City/Gigolo style
4) Swing - 4/4 not too busy, not too syncopated - good for standards
5) ChaCha - A must for ballroom dancers (or use a good rock 4/4 with added perc)
6) Rock/Disco - solid 4 on the floor, and simple backbeats
7) 12/8 ballad - All those 50s songs, and many more
8) 3/4 - Who doesn't love a waltz?

Now, in a perfect world, like I said - you'll need many more, but this will get you there a lot of the time. But - there's lots missing, right? Soooo ....
Here's an expanded EZ-16 that's even more versatile:

1) 8 beat (always on my mind)
2) 16 beat (lady in red)
3) bossa (jobim)
4) chacha (save the last dance)
5) swing (fly me 2 moon)
6) bid band swing (in the mood)
7) Shuffle (just a gigolo)
8) rock shuffle (some kind of wonderful)
9) rock/country-rock (Lyin' eyes)
10) disco (I will survive)
11) 12/8 ballad (crazy, only you)
12) 2/4 polka/bluegrass/hora (duh...)
13) 3/4 waltz (can I have this dance)
14) 3/4 jazz waltz, (Christmas waltz)
15) 5/4 if you're a real jazzer (take 5)
16) 6/4 (Piano Man)

** I prefer use 12/8 (feels like 4/4 but with 8th note triplets on each beat)
rather than 6/8 so I can tap a 4 beat tempo and it will start. In 6/8 I'd have to tap 6 beats, and it will not line up the 1/4 notes in case I switch beats during the song.
This way a locked tempo will be consistent between a straight 8 beat and a 12/8 ballad.

It goes without saying that around the globe this will change for your location, but here in the Western world, I can play a whole night with a simple piano/bass sound and these 16 drum beats. Anything else I add ... is icing on the cake.
(time to go make the donuts)

I know I have explained my Registration setup before, but I'm sure it may interest someone still.
Like Dave, I set up my MAIN Registration Bank (Startup). I assign my most used 7, or in Genos case, 9 styles, each with a different voice. They will be saved on buttons 2 through 8, or 2 through 10 on Genos. On button 1 I put the Song I want to start with a lot of the time.
I name this Registration Bank 1AA, or something similar.
When setting up a NEW song, I save it to button 1, then Save the Reg. BANK, naming it the song name.
The next song, I also save it to button 1, again naming the Bank the song name.
I do all subsequent songs the same way.
I then set my FREEZE settings to ONLY change the Sound when the Freeze light is on.
Now, I can call up a song, by touching Reg. plus and minus buttons at the same time. It shows all my Reg. Banks, which are automatically stored in alphabetical order. When I touch the Freeze button I have all my favorite sounds ready to call up by touching the other buttons, AND each will have their own set of OTS sounds.
If I want to use one of my favorite styles, I ALWAYS have access to them, no matter what Bank is pulled up. Just turn the Freeze light off and touch the button. The style and sound will load.
This allows me to have my favorite styles, and 40 sounds at hand at all times. (Actually more than 40. One on each button, plus three OTS on each style, and three Sounds on each OTS. So that's 27 times nine sounds!) In reality my favorites Nine are adequate almost always.
To explain more, I put a 2/4 Country style on button 2. I put a 3/4 Waltz on 3, I put a 4/4 ballad on 4. I put a Shuffle on 5, I put a 6/8 Ballad on 6, I put a Blues on 7, a Rock n Roll on 8, a Latin on 9 and a Blues Shuffle on 10. Each has one of my favorite sounds assigned to it as well.
I have instant access to all these styles. When the Freeze light is on, I have access to the sounds only.
Button one always has the style and sound for the song I have called up. All the others remain the same.
At some point, you WILL forget to touch the Freeze button and call up a style when you only wanted to change sounds, but you will only do it ONCE. smile You won't forget again.
This is just one of MANY ways you can use the Registrations and Banks. But it works for me. Not sure if or when I will incorporate the Playlist feature.

Take away the chart and most are lost....

This mentioned above only works for players who perform on the cuff like me and others under pressure on stage.... Good I do if you can use it..
It takes years od experience.. Good luck

Good ideas. I do general Styles which fit many songs. I use the OT settings for changing sound setups to fit the song although lately I've been avoiding even that. Too much looking down to hit buttons. Paring down my sounds with piano being the goto and sone type of sax for the solo section.
Playing live is much different than having all the choices you get to use at home.

Dave, Don
Thanks for those tips.
The Freeze Button helps me out of a lot of jams.
But, like Don Days...you gotta remember to turn it off.
Thank God it has a light. I wish the Vocal Harmony button lit when active.

I do not use registrations (user programs) except for special set ups.
I prefer other ways..
You can use OTS on the G70. You can program OTS and use it with 6 parts.
Each OTS button (4 total) can assign any 6 parts (real time). Each button in
the OTS can have different instrument sounds. Then you can select any sound
of the 6 parts for each OTS x4.

But I prefer this way.. when I power on the G70, I will select a sound
in each category (18).
That is my favorite, Piano, EP, Sax, Strings, guitar, Organ, Synth,
Brass, drums etc.
Now they are my go to favorites.. I could search for a different sound,
but no need to.

I select my initial user program that is my primary set up.
Includes assigned button choices, D beam, style, and play mode.
Also mic and routing, harmonizer etc.

Now I can select any style, and maintain my initial settings. No freezes,
or locks. Just pick the style, use the arranger parts,
or left hand bass with rhythm and piano. A single assign button to switch arranger on..
Select my favorite sound in any sound group, instantly..

Just play with out looking for registrations.
