I have an XV88. I've always been curious/concerned as to whether it is better to leave it on basically 24/7, rather than turning it on and off each time I go to use it.
Whenever I turn it back on it has remembered the very patch I was working with so I thought it might be a strain on the memory to leave it off. Yet my questions basically is, will it 'overload/heat' it to leave it on 24/7? What do you guys do?

I once heard someone say that the studios leave shit on all the time, but then i probably read that on the internet, and you know how everything on the internet is true...

Personally, I turn shit off whenever I'm done with it, but I think as long as things don't get too hot, things should be fine.

I have an Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler that gets really hot after 2 hours, and after 4 hours begins ****ing up. If that's the case, turn it off.

Thanks for the thoughts cloakboy. Yeah I read that too about studios which is where I got the idea from.

Don't think it makes that much difference.
However, I had a massive spike on my mains supply the other day, while I was useing my gear.
Knoocked out a fair bit, and I had to power down everything and restart.

If you get a probelm wuth your supply while your away, and the thing is getting something it rather not like, it could do a great deal of damage. I would rather be around a item at the time to shut everything off to protect it.

I would power it down, that's why they have memory batteries inside, to keep the data. Almost all have at least 5 years of life, having the unit on, might extend that about a year if your lucky.
Better to backup your data vai sysex now again too.

I just turn off when I'm not usigg. Well, if I know I'm quitting but going to start up again in a few hours, I just leave it on; but at the end of a day or whatever I just power down. Haven't had any problems doing it like this.

Hello..........I too would power down when not using electronics. Would my 20 year old Yamaha TX81Z still be working perfectly if I left it powered up all this time?? I use my computer everyday and turn it off nightly. It's 4 years old and running strong. I have heard many say that daily turning off and on electronics stresses the solder joints on the cards............... I haven't experienced this............ I've seen this topic heavily debated before!

There are arguments for both sides of this debate. Reasons for studios leaving gear on are
1) Powering down gear can mean losing the state of some settings unless it has all been saved to a preset. 20 years ago many devices didn't even have preset memories so powering down mean't it may be impossible to return to the same settings. This could be a big problem if you were in the middle of working on a track.

2) Powering up does stress electronic chips and powering up daily is probably worse for gear than leaving it on. For non-studios leaving it on is probably more wearing than powering up once or so each week. If you are having to turn something on and off a number of times each day then consider just leaving it on while in use.

3) The power bill for leaving these devices on is not huge so studios can justify any increase in their budget.

4) Old analog gear does become more stable after warming up for 30 mins or more so it may be better to leave this gear warmed up. This is not an issue with modern digital equipment.

5) If something does become too hot then it makes sense to power down when not in use.

Here, the price of electricity has gone up twice this winter, so I don't leave anything on during nights.

for long term its not so good for complex electronis to be left on or off for months or years

vintage electrons in storage should be powerd up once in a wile if there used or not

and the stuff thats allways on shoud be turned off once in a wile so it dosent burn out.
