I want to start out right with my new baby, carefully adding regs from the SX,but also want my old mem stick on hand. The question is whether to add to my s970 USB,or keep the new in a new flash drive. I have ordered two Sandisk 16GB short ones.It is not just capacity, but organization.

Bernie I added all my S970 and all Tyros 5 and Genos styles into the Sx900 User,......then start creating your songs by only using the styles in the Sx900 factory banks...you will hear the differences compared to the s970/T5/Genos etc,.....
save the new factory styles to USER,....
then recreate the style with OTS sounds from the Sx900 sound banks,......
when you come across a song/styles etc, that you cannot find in factory or a third party styles etc, .....then use that one and tweak it to your liking,...but try to setup with all factory styles saved to user first to get the most out of the sound of the SX900..

PS..... YOU WILL FIND OUT THAT THE NEWER SX900 FACTORY STYLES
WITH THE SAME NAMES SOUND DIFFERENT AND BETTER
THEN THE OLDER S970, ETC, STYLES...LISTEN TO EACH INTRO/ENDING AND VARIATIONS OF THE NEWER STYLES ON SX900 COMPARED TO THE OLD..

HAVE FUN

I have A disk I used for the S975, and a folder in my computer with all old Yamaha data.

My method:
Open two screens in computer: One for the new mem. Stick and one screen for the data from the S975. Copy and Paste, or Drag into the new disk the data that you feel you might need. Open the new mem. Stick in your new Sx900. Delete what you feel is not necessary. I do the same with the old Yamaha data.

I have styles from Gary, Rikki, Donny, and a few others. The job of selecting the good styles begins with deleting the ones you do not like. Same with all the other information you have. Keep in mind that editing the work you have done must stay open, what you loved today may sound terrible tomorrow.

Bernie, you may know what I have just written, but it was needed in case.

The good part:
As you work through, your Sx 900 it will have a Bernie flavor, not a Steve, Donny, or John flavor. It is my opinion that the Sx900 is the best tool Yamaha has made, excluding the Genos. Treat it as such, and you will enjoy what happens.

Post some of your ideas about setting up, then make changes if they fit your what You want. Keep in mind that the Sx900 cannot fit everybody’s wants and desires.

I select my song in the Play List and I have 8 Regs and 4 OTS, WOW. But if I use a Reg just to change voices, then maybe there is no reason for a Wow.

I am open for your opinions, John C.

Thank you Donny and John for your advice. It seems the time element is the only downside to starting from scratch.OTOH,all my 970 reg banks play, and sound better due to the new effects, and,or samples. I thought that new models play older regs using the nearest that engine has to the same. If that's so,what is the point of duplicating? Couldn't I simply bring in the old banks and edit the 1-8 regs? I am excluding new styles and sounds of the SX. I will treat those separately. In other words, both of you use old and new. What determines if you use the old, except that it is already there to use?

I don't want to take the easy way out and use 970 banks if it is not going to sound as good.

Donny, that's a tough one because it depends on what you are comparing,as they are different animals in a way.

The Audya is the king of uncompressed live sound and great styles. It has features like 4 sub outs,S/PDIF,on and on,but is 12-13 yrs old. Like the G70,you will never see it again, except in somewhat lesser reincarnations. Time and technology marches on with improvements seen in all of the SD line,as far as features are concerned.

SD40 is a great module with many uses, such as light weight shows, being able to perform anywhere. I use it for Karaoke, midi's,and style playing and singing. The sound is very good and live,if not quite so much as the Audya

SX900 is great, and a big upgrade from the s970,although a little trickier until I get used to the new system. Since you didn't mention the s970, I won't bother to mention a couple of thing I like better, but it is minor. I wanted a keyboard with speakers and light that could handle the zillions of Yamaha styles better than what I have. For that,I am overjoyed.

At present,my Pa4X will remain my main board, but the SX900,soundwise, is gaining ground. Everyone has their own needs, and mine are now met.

Thanks for asking even if it is not much help I'm afraid.

Hi Bernie,
I think the main thing will be in deciding how you want to set up and use your registrations and playlists.

You don’t want to start doing it one way, and then decide halfway thru the alternative might have been the better option.

My method I believe may be similar to John’s . One song, 1 bank of registrations. That way the registrations can be fine tuned or changed along the way, without impacting on other songs.

May or may not be the best option for performance purposes, but for me it’s working out well.

Thanks Rikki

There has never been a question about one reg per bank. I have always done that. The question is,of those, how many old can I use that is on another thread.

I certainly agree with starting out correctly the first time.

Thanks for your help,on and off, the last 20 yrs.
