Great! That's exactly the way I improvise, but for many years didn't realize it was a "scale". As long as you don't stray too far from the basic notes of the chord, or scale, almost anything you play works. Don't get me wrong, of course I will never reach his level of expertise!
The same thing works regardless of the genre, when you adapt it as far as speed and riff selection. If you know the chords, you can "jam" to any song.
Very helpful Donny.

Great stuff and very true what Don says. What Tony M demonstrated is also known as the minor blues scale. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t understand how to use the other blues scale, known as the major blues until recently. The expert improvisers know how to weave in and out of both the major and minor blues. scale. For more info on this topic I highly recommend Dan Greenblatt’s book “ The Blues Scales, Essential Tools for Jazz Improvisation”

Very instructive. Obviously, a lot of practice goes into reaching that great speed.

Improvising is an art in itself. Like Don said, “If you know the chords, you can Jam to anything.”

If you wish to know the rest of the story, and its short cuts, let me know. A minor scale is only a small part of improvising.
