Goes right along with ". can you turn it down, we want to talk". Guess the guy didn't realize how insulting he was. Should of stayed home.

Noice cancelling headphones are AWESOME! You can still hear speech and music .... it just cuts out the low rumbles. I won't fly without mine.

It was not a problem. I play this place monthly-an assisted
Living place. Lunch time-usually about 60 people.

On the surface it seems very rude to wear headphones during a performance, but assuming the gentleman was elderly , I’d cut him some slack. I know, my dad for example, can not tolerate live music and lots of background noice due to his hearing aid. Perhaps this gentleman was just can’t deal with live music and background noice due to hearing problems.

Something happened to me not too long ago that was similar to Deane’s experience. While playing for some seniors, I noticed a teenaged girl in the audience, and she was moving, grooving and having fun! I was a bit surprised as I was playing the typical Great American Songbook standards in a swing style. I was thinking how great it is this music still resonates with the youth, only to soon realize that she was not listening to me at all, but to her ear buds! So much for “ be so good that they can’t ignore you” smile

At least he wasn't being disruptive. Maybe he really didn't want to be there. If the staff makes it mandatory for the residents to attend, that could be his personal defense mechanism. Same with the teenaged girl- she probably didn't want to be there. Her behavior was ignorant and immature but not disruptive. I wouldn't take it personally.

You could be the greatest talent in the world and there will be SOMEONE who doesn't appreciate it ...

But as UD said, perhaps the gentleman was just blocking out low rumbles and background noise and was still enjoying the music ...

The teenager was being just that - a TEENAGER !
