I know, my dad for example, can not tolerate live music and lots of background noice due to his hearing aid. While playing for some seniors, I noticed a teenaged girl in the audience, and she was moving, grooving and having fun! I was a bit surprised as I was playing the typical Great American Songbook standards in a swing style. I was thinking how great it is this music still resonates with the youth, only to soon realize that she was not listening to me at all, but to her ear buds! If the staff makes it mandatory for the residents to attend, that could be his personal defense mechanism. Same with the teenaged girl- she probably didn't want to be there. Her behavior was ignorant and immature but not disruptive. I wouldn't take it personally.
