(This is also posted on the PSR tutorial forum)

I decided to MIDI my Roland RD2000(as Master) to my Genos(as slave). I’m using a regular midi cable...out on RD2000 to in on Genos. I’m doing this to be able play on my Genos using a weighted keyboard.

My goal has been to use the keyboard on my RD2000 to control styles on the Genos. Turns out Genos makes that part easy. Just go to chords in the midi section and select the appropriate port.

Thing is, now all 88 keys on my Roland control styles; there is no split on the Roland keyboard which would allow me to play styles on the left side of the Roland keys and individual notes on the right side of the keyboard.

So I’m researching what I can re:midi and the two keyboards I midi’d together. I’m no expert in MIDI but am learning.

I don’t plan to gig with this combo...just playing for my own enjoyment.

Any thoughts, comments are welcome.

😊

Here's my best guess, not having either keyboard. I'm sure the 2000 can do splits. It designed to be a midi controller keyboaard. You just have to set the midi transmit channel to different numbers for each side of your split. And I'm sure the Genous can also do splits ( and set ranges for the keyboard ) so then match the Genous midi recieve channels to match the send channels of the 2000.
Again just a guess but worth a try.

BTW with a setup like that I wouldn't label it "Poor Man's " laugh

I’d look for something in the manual of the Genos for a single channel that ‘mirrors’ the layout of the Genos’s own keyboard. Many arrangers have this ability.

Your main issue with splitting the Roland is that each Upper and Lower and MBASS Part in the arranger will have its own channel. So you are faced with the issue of setting up programs in the RD for Lower to arranger, MBS to arranger, Upper to arranger UPR1, UPR2, UPR3, and hand select if layered. Then you’ll have to make sure that the Roland doesn’t send PC changes, sends bender or after touch when needed, doesn’t send them when not, or enable or disable them on a per Registration basis in the Genos.

If the Genos has a dumb ‘one channel mirror’ mode, life will be a lot less complex...

Many years ago when I bought my first keyboard, I added a second keyboard, a Yamaha Synth. I was at Sam Ash’s office talking to Jerry Ash, the owner. I knew him personally; I taught his son guitar. Jerry Ash was talking about the new type of keyboard they just received; it was a Yamaha Synth, to my knowledge it was the first of its kind.

I bought a book, “How to work with Midi”. And then simplified what I learned.
1-When someone speaks, the listener must be tuned to the same station (Midi track) to hear him. Master keyboard; piano on Midi track #1, Synth keyboard must be set on track #1 the number the represents piano on the list of instrument sound and Midi numbers. Simple?

Yes it is, if you stop right there. There are 16 Midi tracks, and within each track there are more tracks, areas to add what you want. Now it becomes a bit difficult. My first attempt was to set the master keyboard to piano, and the Synth. to strings. I used a volume control between both keyboards. I was able to add strings and the volume to my piano.
I hope this helps, John C.
