I just came across an awesome YouTube Tutorial by NewJazz explaining the structure of these 7 Major Modes:

Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq2xt2D3e3E

The author shows how to visualize them using a circle and then proceeds to lay down the rules for the other Modes – Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor, Harmonic Major, Diminished, Whole Tone and Augmented Modes.

He has links in the description to construct your own cardboard tool to figure out each family of Modes.

He also has a link to download a free Windows/Mac app that lets you visualize each Mode and Play back the sound.

I thought both the ModeWheel App and the NewModeWheel App are awesome desktop tools for learning Music Theory.

Hello!

I like these types of tools. This looks like an extension of the Circle of Fifths. I have a copy of that Circle of Fifths staring me in the face whenever I play. -charley

Hi Charley,

Yes, it is exactly like the Circle of 5ths Tool, except that it is meant to work for the MODES.

I use this Circle of 5th Tool Wheel made by Noisy Clan.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CC9C4H9T/

I found it very useful.

It comes with this PDF guide that explains how to assemble and use this tool along with the Music Theory behind the Chords and the Modes.

Hello!!

Your Music Theory Wheel looks more intense and versatile than mine!! I ordered one. I've passed out extra circle of fifths wheels to friends over the years. Most of them have never heard of them. I love when old turns into new. -charley

Ha! I watched the 2 videos by Vivian and was compelled to make and instant purchase too.

This is like having the Circle of 5ths on steroids. I can’t believe how she managed to squeeze in so much information.

This sure beats the Noisy Clan Wheel I had before.

Good luck with your new and improved wheel Charley!
