As most of you know my website "Technics For All" contains .wma files of various Technic Keyboards and Technic Keyoard Players.

I recently recieved an email, that I have no real answer for. The following is part of that email:
__________________________________________

" Bonjour LARRY,
I can open the web pages 1,2,3,. A notice comes up saying "The specified server could not be found " I am unable to listen or put on the floppy.
The songs are just my kind of music........Just great and I am anxious to get to them.
HELP.........."

I hope someone can give her some advise, as I'm not sure of the meaning of:
"specified server could not be found".
I told her I would ask on the forum for help..any ideas ?

Thank To All

The reported error suggests that the media player in use, whatever it may be, is unable to connect directly to the URL to play the files directly. Rather than attempting to play the files in real time, try downloading from the web site, by right clicking on the file name and then 'Save Target as...'

Thanks Willum...a follow up:

So the fault probably lies in the type of media player she is using, rather then the web server?

Does it matter what type of Media Player
the user is using when trying to play these files?

Being that they are Windows Media Audio (wma) files, would she have a better chance of playing these files with Windows Media Player, rather then say....Real Audio?

I'm waiting for a reply from her to find out what her default media player is on her computer. I wonder if she has Quick Time and a MAC, and if they read .wma files?

Hi Larry,

If you remember when you first put up the site I had exactly the same problem because my default player was the Windows Media Player(WMP). I downloaed the files and played them using WinAmp and they played fine.

However, A day later when I tried it again Windows Media Player opened and played them fine without downloading them.

I do not know what fixed the problem but I'm 90% certain it's the Windows Media Player causing the problem.

Hi Larry, I've had another search around the 'Web' and I think that the error message "The specified server could not be found " does suggest that a MAC is being used.

Larry, how about using Zip files, then I can open them too. I run a Mac also.

Willum, I believe you are correct.

Doug,

I will send you a zipped file of
one of the .wma songs by email. Let us know if it plays on your MAC

My question...Is it the MAC, or more likely is it the MAC media player that is at fault? I believe the default media player for a MAC is QuickTime. I have QuickTime on my PC, and it does not read .wma files.

So my next question...Can you install Windows Media Player on a MAC, and use that to play .wma files ?

oops..no email for Doug.

So, is there anyone else who uses a MAC and would like to test it ? Or I could send the .wma song through Bebop's email list, and then obtain an overall view.
