I have had my Echo Indigo in my laptop for some time, for SMF playback. It is good, but I wonder if any of you have a better one.

only in features, not really in sound quality. Emu and Digigram have products with digital I/O as well as analogue, but more expensive and with break out cables. Creative have a card but I would rate the Echo higher. I used the original Indigo for many years for streaming sample audio playback with no latency, only replacing it with the I/O version for convenience.

Brenie,
How does the Echo Indigo attach to the laptop? I have an older laptop, so what should I be looking for?

Thanks, John C.

Hi John
The card is no longer available, having been replaced by the Echo DJ I/O. These cards are type2 slot cards that slip into a slot 1/4 x 2/1/2. You install the driver, designate the port in your program, and you're good to go. My SD2 module is a little better sounding, especially on drums and bass, but I have to carry around a MidiSport interface with the module. It is simply easier to keep my Indigo in the slot and go.

Bernie, the audio specs are still state of the art, the only reason to change is features.

Bruno, the pcmcia (or pc card) slot on the laptop needs to be type II cardbus (32bit) rather than the older 16 bit spec. All laptops since around 1997 "should" be cardbus (my win98 laptop was where I first used the original indigo) but if a very cheap or old machine check the manufacturer specs.

New laptops now have express card slots which are incompatible with pc card (an adaptor costs ~$100) so unfortunately the echo will one day be joining the pile of obsolete gear, and the usb a/d-d/a boxes used again.

I intend to keep mine. Just another example(along with the KN7000) of newer not being necessarily better.
