Hi,
No such thing as "best synth".
All depends on what you're after.

So what is it that you're interested in? What kind of music are you planning on making and what kind of sounds did you have in mind?

I mean "jazz" can mean a lot of things.

I have been in the playing industry for quite a few years...I have played for MGM;Universal;Epcot Center; Carnage Hall,; many many bars and colleges in New orleans and in Memphis TN. My setup consists of a Roland D-20 ( about 22 years old) and a Roland U-220 Module( Also 20 years old) The truth is, you have to ask yourself two questions:
1.) Is this the only thing I am going to use my Keyboard for?
2.) What kind of quality and range do I want..i.e. how many keys...most GIG keyboards have only 64 keys and it is plenty if you are playing in a quartet that really knows how to improve...if not then, you might want to look for something that has the full 88 keys. The only question here is whether or not you want to have the benefit of weighted keys of the benefit of not having such heavy gear to tote around...reply back to john_potter2@yahoo.com if you want to really look for a good keyboard that doesn't break the bank or the back.

As far as software is concerned, I would suggest using a program called Limewire and download Acid Pro or Sonic Foundry Sound fore 5-8 because they are really user-friendly and they usually come with cracks so you don't have to run the program as a demo because it limits what you can do within the program.

I'm having MS LIONSTRACS MS76. OPPEN SURCE KEYBOARD.
I'm using it as midi arranger comopser with additional VST e.g. VIRTUAL GUITARIST II, and on other track I put sound from Native Instruments KONTAK. I can tell you that are really good.

As a great all-around synth with ton's of great samples, a great solid sound engine, good features and great Operating system, I would recommend the Korg Triton Extreme. I've had the yamaha Motif ES 88 and I sold it as it was just too big and bulky to gig with. The sounds of the Motif are really good, but the OS stinks.

I've had the Korg Triton Pro for years, then upgraded to the Triton Extreme about 2 years ago. It is my 'go to' synth for gigging. It has great Acoustic, natural samples, great 80's synth sounds with the additional MOSS Z1 board. There are literally tons of free patches in the public domain.

Give it a good look...
