I want to buy a new Technics keyboard. It will be used without a PA system so the onboard sound quality is of utmost importance. I now have a KN5000. I am looking at a KN2600. I have read up about the keyboard and the most outstanding difference seems to be the SD card and the NX sound technology. My needs are simply a keyboard with the capability to load custom styles and sound settings that I have from my 5000 and a friends 7000.

Also is the 5000 comparable for the onboard sound quality (In "quality" I mean as in HIFI compared to an older tape recorder, not instrument emulation.)Basically is there anyone who would say, keep your KN5000?

Would appreciate advice ASAP.

Hi SkyBooks2, The Kn6500 is far beyond the Kn5000 in features and on board sound. The Kn7000 has taken features and sound to even a highe level. When I used my Kn5000 I had to use some sort of outside amplification. The Kn7000 can full a room of 30 to 40 people withoput addtional amplification, it has a far superior sound system. The SD card has to be the best upgrade Technics put in the keyboard. One SD card takes the place of all the floppy disk that I was using. And --- it is so much faster in loading and saving time.

SkyBrook 2, E-mail me, I have a friend with both keyboards a Kn6500 and a KN7000, I know he wants to sell one of them. His keyboards have never left the house, he?s a sax player.
My suggestion would be the KN7000, it is a winner.

Sorry. I did have a KN2600 and found the KN7000 better by far, and so was the price.

I would keep the KN5000 and add a small woffer like the ones used on the computers, adds a great deal to the sound. IMHO.

KN2600 sounds excellent here. It is making money for me, and everyone that hears it is very impressed.

There is a lot of control over the output sound quality on the KN2600 so if it doesn't sound good it is in your own hands!

The KN2600 puts out 40 Watts and if wound up enough can be pretty loud. If you need more clout hook it up to a Logitec Z2300 or something.

The KN7000 is nice, but just too heavy to be practical for me. After years of Yamaha I am hooked on the KN2600!

Technics keyboards Kn1000, Kn2000, Kn3000. Kn5000, Kn6000, Kn6500 and the Kn7000 were all flagship models. Each year they got better and better. The Kn2400 and the Kn2600 were made to compete with a lower market. Although I have own and played the Kn2600 on a job I can not compare it with the Kn5000, it's been to long since I sat with a KN5000.

I know when they made the Kn5000 they put in their best ideas ? not so with the 2400 and the 2600. This does not mean that they are not good keyboards, it's just that they did not follow line of better and better.

If dollars must be watched I would keep the Kn5000 and add a sub. If not, why not the Kn2600.
Anyone out there own both keyboards for a good opinion?

Thanks guys. Perhaps I should have been clearer in my original post.

My query is basically, did technics strip the 2600 of vital basics eg. less variations/fill ins/intro, onboard sound sytem (speakers) or important voices OR is it just less "pro" stuff as in complicated composing and sequencing tools which I wouldnt use anyways.

Another very important thing to me was onboard sound quality (bass and surround) etc. Subwoofers were mentioned for my 5000, can someone give me some advice on that line.

My gut feeling was that the newer the board even if its stripped down version it would have a better sound system due to technology advances in the last 10 years, is that not so?

The KN2600 has:-

SD Audio,
SD Technics, MIDI and Style storage,
NX, GM2 and GM sounds,
USB Audio and MIDI connection to computer.
The ability to load styles from any previous Technics keyboard.

It is 30% lighter than a KN7000 due to it not having an onboard sub woofer, large colour screen etc. That is fine by me, if I want a sub I can bring one with me, but I don't have to hump it around all the time. The onboard sound is excellent, with plenty of bass - it has eq on every mixer channel, so you can dial in as much or little as you need for every sound you are using!

The SD audio lets me take my studio recordings out on the road with me so I can sound like no other keyboard ever made - or any of them!

The KN2600 was the last keyboard Technics produced and includes all their important technological advances to date - as far as I am concerned!

I reread some of my post on the Kn5000 and KN2600. I was negative about the KN2600 and I realize why. After playing the KN7000 for a while I purchased the KN2600 because it was not as heavy. I tried my best but I had trouble settling for the difference in sound and amplification. I weighed the difference -- the lighter weight or the better sound. I stayed with the KN7000. The feel, sound, and operation in my opinion is fantastic. I also bought a Tyros I -- and I sold it for the same reason.

If it sounded like I was putting the KN2600 down it was only in the comparison.
