I live in a small capital city Hobart Australia and have been trying to purchase a 3.5 Smart Media card for my Casio Privia
PX400R keyboard.
Computer shops do not have them in stock and camera shops say they are being phased out.
Anyone know what the situation is.

Yes...Yamaha did not check far enough ahead when designing the present range of boards.
The Smart Media is limited to 128mb which although good enough for most keyboards, this limit has caused it's early retirement from the market.

EBay is absolutely the way to go for SmartMedia. Here in the United States SmartMedia has been phased-out too. But the new STAGEA Electone was designed to use SmartMedia. Yamaha went with this media to take advantage of the built-in security ID in each SmartMedia chip. That way they can use it for copy protection schemes.

When I wanted to buy SmartMedia for use with my STAGEA I couldn't find anything retail locally. But on EBay you can buy all the SmartMedia you want for great prices!

Cheers!
