In that case a great product would be the Tascam FW-1884 *EDIT* I meant to link you to the FW-1082, the link is changed http://www.tascam.com/Products/fw1082.html I played with on at GC and it is one great product. I dont know if it has as many channels as you want, but they do have a larger version, but more spendy. Good module for about 700-800. Also there is the smaller rackmount version for a couple hundred less http://www.tascam.com/Products/fw1804.html

It is a bit exspensive, but reasonable. Another thing to concider is that it is a new product, in a year it will drop a good 100 or so with an array of used gear for a lot cheaper. Currently the best deal ive found on the desktop console was 615 (new i think), the best price on rackmount was 465 (used). There are several other options including Presonus firestation and another Presonus product that is a rackmount firewire box with 8 inputs. A used firestation is 350. The key thing is to keep your eyes peeled on used gear. I dont know how you feel about used stuff but finding gear used for cheap and in gresat condition is very much worth it in my opnion.

Im trying to find another type of setup your looking for and trying to stay less than 500. I think im heading into a Mixer with the DeltaLT. 200 for the PCI card, and 300 to dump into a mixer, easily setup and cost effective. If you want a setup that is easily transferred and setup i would sugget the Tascam console, just one firewire cord and its quite small.
