What do you mean with "in real time"?
A man on a mixer has two hands to level the output in real time...
A comp/limiter will give you a static output level and you can use one for each instrument.
A noisegate is useful for eleminate surrounding noises of the microphones (drums and singer).
If you need some special effects like reverb/delay/flange then they should be controlled by the drummer itself (like the effects of a guitarist/keyboardist).

Well, for recording on a computer you should be able to control your effects like you can do it with your synths. Most digital effects have a midi port which allows you to control effect related values like pitch, EQ, in+out level, LFO speeds, and so on...
The same options should be available for you even if you're using virtual devices for your recordings...

Well, this seems to be a typical problem of unsufficient memory capacity. The processor shouldn't be the problem but for Cubase MX/SX it is recommended to use 512 MB RAM minimum (especially if you're running virtual synths or effects).

Buy a small(er) mixer with 8 channels for you drums, mix each drum how you want and take the stereo output so its only one channel.

As for the device I would suggest the Delta 1010 (300-400 used, 500 new i think) its a pci and rackmount that uses one cable to transfer everything from the breakout box. A cheaper suggestion is the Delta 1010LT, pci card with 10 channels worth or inputs. 200 new.
