That's a good question. If you get the TG77, it has this cool "bar-graph" display that indicates activity on each MIDI channel the TG77 is receiving.

If you go SY77, it doesn't have the "bar-graph" but it has a really nice 16 track sequencer, 720k MS-DOS compatible disk drive(you can download patches from the internet and load right from the PC diskette), and a second assignable modulation wheel.

I use the extra mod wheel to control volume on my synth modules.

The TG and SY share the same PCM samples and patches. They sound identical.

What to buy SY or TG77 depends on what you already have. If you have not master keyboard yet or workstation it is better to by SY77. But if you have already fully paked instrument with big or maybe even weighted keys, with sequencer, buy TG77. It is cheaper!

I have TG77, but don't remember I have seen a bar-display for MIDI in. Well, in DEMO song mode yes but not otherwise.

I'm using it with DX7II (among others) and am missing only the floppy drive. I made a PC DOS program which converts SY-77 files to MDR2-files (DX7II-FD with E!) so I can load the SY77 sounds to it from my DX7IIFD with E!.

But the best is to use some Windows editor/librarian (I recommend one from MidiQuest, haven't used the editor yet though).

The thing I like(d) in TG-77 was the 8 individual outputs (mono) in addition to the two stereo pairs with effects).
