Hey guys,
I have a whole bunch of my old AKAI files (compresssed .zip format) and my sampler only converts from AKAI if you insert an AKAI format CD. Question is, how do I get my stuf from .zip back into AKAI format?
Just unzipping the files and copying them to CDs doesn't do the trick.

Does anybody know how do deal with this stuff?

Ed,

Take a look at an original Akai file and check the file extension. Then look at the ones that you have unzipped and make sure the extension is the same. If it is not, then you can do a global change by using the DOS window of your computer. Now find the CD of styles and type dir (enter)This will show you the files on the CD. Now type: ren(space)*.(unzipped style extension) (space) *.(Orriginal style extension)(Enter) This may solve your problem.

OKay, will give it a shot.
Now, someone said that I should unzip the files directly to a CD instead of unzipping them first and then copying them. Easier said than done, since some of the zipped files are over a gig in size...

well, I had no luck with it. Even though the files are AKAI and they are zipped, when I unzip them they turn out to be over 600mb in size (which is way larger than most CDs can handle). I also found that unzipping directly to CDs is not really possible.
But there mus be a way...
PLease help!
regards,

600MB should not be a problem, there are 700mb and 800mb CD's
who can be bought in most shops who have this kind of stuff.

What file type is this, (name.???), styles or samples?

THey are AKAI sample libraries. About ten or so 600mb CDs full of samples, programs (all organized into volumes ; I do not know if you are familiar with AKAI samplers and their ways of organizing their samples and programs)

Problem is, the guy brought them all in on a few DVDs in a compressed .zip format. Now, thanks for mentioning 700mb CDs. That solves half a problem.
However, it leaves a few questions.
How do I unzip the files directly onto CDs. Do I actually need to unzip them directly to CDs or is it safe to just unzip and copy the files over?
Regards,

Would Chicken Systems Translator help ? They claim to handle ALL synth formats and can convert Akai format to any of them.

Thanks, but I doubt it. In my case my sampler (EXS24) has no problem converting AKAI samples. Problem is, I have to unzip and copy the files to CDs in order to be able to convert them. Unfortunately AKAI import only works if you convert right from the CD itself.
