What started out as a disasteous day turned into one very pleasant afternoon. After my new double-neck Gretsch guitar guitar came in with no available case, I found a really nice guy named Ken who owns a small California company named Blue Heron...a supplier/manufacturer of high end gig bags. In arranging for my case, Ken mentioned that he hosts a bluegrass music radio show.
I really don't like bluegrass music, but have a long-time friend, J.D. Crowe, who is really a Bluegrass innovator and legend. J.D. needed to ship a banjo today, so I invited him to the office to use our shipping department. He has a J.D. Crowe signature model Gibson banjo and was selling an old one.
He called Ken and we spent the afternoon talking about all kinds of music, players, etc. I really shouldn't have been surprised, but J.D. has an extensive knowledge of ALL kinds of music, including jazz, jazz players and music history in general. On top of that, he is humble and unassuming, in spite of a world-wide reputation, Grammy's, etc.
Just goes to prove that nice guys sometimes finish FIRST!
Russ
PS: Don't worry, folks, NO chance I'll try to learn to play the 5-string, although I have an interesting banjo (a Honer, I think) with a six string neck and an old Gretsch tenor banjo (VERY LOW MILES ON IT!).
