Oh, for sure. I work on a couple of agricultural magazines and farming these days almost requires a business degree and a science degree of one kind or another. It wouldn't hurt to be a computer geek either.

You're right, guys, farming is a big, complicated business. We sold our farm in 2001. It was a beef and corn operation.

When we were closing down, we had to pay capital gains of over $230,000 just on the sale of fully depreciated farm equipment...combines, trucks, tractors, etc.

Of course, I was not a "working partner". An
uncle worked and managed the land. He was born and lived all his life on the property.
We agreed that he could farm as long as he wanted to. His wife died and he was approaching 80 years old. It was his choice to sell, but it was really hard to let a piece of family history disappear.
