I miss Frank so much. He is probably the main reason I am so anti censorship because that was his life's cause. Plus I will always love his music.

Plus being recorded in the 80s using a DX-7 it just goes to show that the gear doesn't mean nearly as much as the musicianship. The DX-7 sounds great in this clip.

You're right, Nigel...at least to me,it's way more about ability and heart than the type of equipment.

Often, someone asks specifics about recording equipment used on a commercial project, EQ, compression, settings on amplification, and mostly, I don't remember or never new.

Zappa was a real innovator in many ways. He was totally committed to his art and using it to make real statements about his philosophies, the state of the world, etc.

He made the world a better and more interesting place. He was a major contributor to our culture. And, his body of work prooves that music matters, across the spectrum.

I first saw Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention live in Melbourne Australia in 1973 when I was only 19 years old. The Mothers at that time included George Duke on keys, Jean Luc Ponty violin, Ruth & Ian Underwood, Ansley Dunbar and of course Frank Zappa. I was totally blown away watching that band play and will never forget it.

What a strange man, that Zappa is.

I never "got" his music, but I appreciate his creativity. He has a unique style, but I just can't find anything likeable about that song. Sorry, Nigel - I know you like him !

That's OK Dave. If everyone got Frank's sense of humor he probably wouldn't be pleased at all as he never wanted to be mainstream. It really is an aquired taste and I guess I grew up ( musically ) at a time during the counter culture in the late 60s and early 70s so I found a lot of appeal in Frank Zappa's music. Between the hard rock humor and the avant guarde jazz influences it just worked for me. I don't expect it to appeal to everyone in general. I guess even some of the classic rock numbers I play in my band now that includes AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chilli Peppers wouldn't appeal to most non rock audiences.

It's the variety in musical styles that are out there that keep it interesting.

He DOES have an interesting vocal quality.
I guess I'm just more of a mainstream guy. Sigh ... so boring !

I actually saw The Mothers Of Invention perform "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" from Apostrophe back in the early 70s with Jean Luc Ponty playing electric violin. Fantastic stuff !!!!
