Kerry and I went and saw Steely Dan play at the Gibson Amphitheater in LA earlier in the week. The opening set was the Royal Scam album in its entirety. Fantastic stuff. Because Larry Carlton was a primary guitarist on that album Larry played co-lead guitar with Steely Dan that night. What a treat. It really was a magic experience.

Steely Dan played 4 concerts in LA and at 3 they opened with a complete album. The Friday concert featured Aja, Saturday was Gaucho and Monday that we saw was Royal Scam. The Tuesday night concert consisted entirely of Internet requested songs.

Steely Dan are such a class act and have such a broad catalogue of classic hit songs to draw on.

It seemed that Donald Fagen used Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos. The keyboard player used a Yamaha grand piano, a Hammond XK and a Nord Stage.

If you ever need to nail the Dan Rhodes sound exactly, jack a Suitcase Rhodes -- from the era -- through the lowly little MXR dynacomp stompbox pedal of the era, via the two effects jacks.

No rosewood hammers or other mods, straight stock Rhodes Suitcase with the old rubber covered stock hammers.

MXR Dynacomp wasn't just fer the gitter pickers...

The Dan is always a purty good show.

I know ya had fun.

Hey thanks for that tip I didn't know that. Long ago I did have one of those MXR Dynacomp boxes that I played guitar through. I'm guessing you could probably get something similar from most compressors if you don't have an MXR.

Great group and music. And, you GOTTA like the origin of the band's name!

Yes, they named themselves after a dildo in William Burroughs' 1959 novel “Naked Lunch”
