Well when the battery goes then all the presets in memory just become junk data and that bad data can cause all sorts of issues that wouldn't occurr with valid patch data.
After replacing the battery you should do a reset or reload the original factory data to replace that bad patch data. I am just not familiar with the 309 to know what the procedure is for setting it back to factory state.
A battery replacement should be quite cheap so it is well worth trying before deciding something worse is wrong.
