Tried a quick recording of "Smooth" by Santana on my Tyros last night. Unfortunately I couldn't find my cd to listen to, so I've played it by ear and out of my head - needless to say it's probably in the wrong key etc but for all you tyro addicts enjoy the fix! :-)

You can download the mp3 at :
http://www.psrworld.com/tyrosdemos.htm#songs

I chose the smooth lead guitar for this recording, as I thought it sounded close to the carlos sound though I've been told already it's not quite dirty enough. See what you think.
Incidentally the midifile is available from the tyrosworld group and I also posted a revoiced version for the 9000 to the yamaha-psr-songs group.

Comments welcome,

Simon

simon,
Ok, I confess....I'm the guy who said "it wasn't dirty enough guitar." I've been a huge Santana fan since the first tune I heard of his in the 60's. Of course it's just my opinion on what I hear.

You did a great rendition of Smooth though.
jam on,
Terry

Simon,
I'am downloading your file right now and this means something, considering that it's more than 4 Mb and I am on a meager 56K connection (that right now is working at 24K...)
More about it later.

Simon, I am listening to Smooth right now. I like the drums: very crisp. The guitar is more or less the same as on the 9000pro: good but not "bad". The brass are good but maybe it would be better to layer three or four sounds to simulate the impact of a real horn section. I like the organ sound. The guitar solo is good and the organ background very appropriate. After the fill and the variation the brass "kick" more and the whole song is better and I guess that you sensed that because your solo is more intense, like you too were being driven by the beat.
The finale is very good.
OK: congratulations Simon! (clapping noise in the background)
Now I am waiting for the "real" expert's opinion: Eric, where art thou?

First off, thanks Terry for your positive criticism. I had hoped to find my copy of santana's album before attempting the recording, but couldnt and didn't want to lose the "buzz" of putting it down on disk. I attempted to use pitch bending on the guitar lead, but as you know with an arranger unless you first record the left hand it's almost impossible! Needless to say a few chord changes were a little late coming in!
I tried to add another track and overdub some more brass phrases on the guitar solo but it somehow changed the dsp effects on the guitar, so I gave up!

Dreamer, thanks for taking the time to download the rather lengthy file (perhaps I should do shorter versions in future!). The guitar voice (smooth lead) seems to be a cool electric jazz guitar with dsp added, maybe its similar to the carlos guitar on the pro. The brass I agree needs a bit more bite, I was playing 3 voices simultaneously but guess thats just it, better to put them down individually. As for the organ, well that was just me having a bit of fun towards the end whilst creating the mp3 from the midi!

Regards
Simon
