I think, knowing some of them, that they are actually very similar.

I suggest you to not loose too much time, but find one that seems ok for you (a friend's demo could be helpful in any) and start working focusing mainly on music.

When you will be an expert you will be able to catch different nuances of each program and make the final decision that perfectly fits for you.

Better starting with LE versions, usually cheapest, that in most cases fits any beginner need.

A good program that does midi well and also does audio recording is cakewalk Sonar.

I would not suggest getting the high-end Sonar producer if you are just beginning but the home or studio version will get you up and running with recording music.

It is easy to use and is very intuitive.

As music theacher I utilize the Encore notator made by Gvox Interactive Music since 1990. The actual version is 4.5.5
Very easy to operate and produces clean and perfect music parts.

For notation software I use ScoreWriter.

My friend is a piano teacher and he wants to write a music book for beginners and others music students. So he needs a good sw to do that.
