Something that i've never really understood so im hoping someone can answer me.

Do XG specific midi's only really benefit from playing in XG instruments or would they make a difference on all instruments? For example, if i have 2 midis that are the same but one is an XG version, would playing it in sy my PA1x make any difference or not?

They benefit only from XG instruments, because XG is an extension to the GM sound set, in sounds as well as in other areas.

Think upside down, if XG midi files could make a difference in all intruments, there would't be a market for Yamaha XG modules and keyboards.

Because (as Yamaha stated) the XG is much more than an extended sound set, sometimes XG files will play very very different on GM instruments, to the point they become unusable.

Thanks for your reply! However i should have made myself a bit clearer.. I fully understand already what you said, but the actual answer i was looking for you said it at the end of your post! I had a feeling that XG files would sound odd elsewhere..

Hi Danny,
it probably wouldn't sound as good unless you went to the trouble of tweaking. Possibly a bit of revoicing , adjusting volumes etc.

Similar to playing a GS midifile created for a Roland. Sounds better on the synth/keyboard it was created for, unless one's prepared to put in a bit of time adjusting it to suit your keyboard.
