Hello people!
I was a Motif ES6 owner and changed it for a PSR3000 because I saw somewhere, that the PSR3K have a lot of sounds from Motif ES. FALSE! Now I miss the Piano, Drums, Percussion and several Synth sounds, but I really like the arranger functions from PSR, so, Tyros2 comes and I wonder: Does the Tyros2 have the wave data (sounds) from Motif ES? I am aware that SA voices are totally new but I miss a lot ES sounds.
Anyway, my first concern is the piano sound: I hate the PSR piano, itīs the Tyros2 piano the same from PSR?
By the way, I have downloaded any manual from Tyros2, but It only mentions its programs, not wave data.
Could anybody help me? I like the Tyros2, but is too expensive and I want to be sure enough that it fullfils my sound needs as I already lost a lot of money purchasing the PSR3000...
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
Regards
Jose Pereira

Short anwswer: NO. A few sounds are similar, but they do not share the same waveforms and, even when they apparently do, they sound different (the Motif ES has a more "cold" sound, while the Tyros 2 sounds "warmer"; maybe this depends from the effect section, I don't know...)

Long answer: my opinion on the different sound categories is the following:
Acoustic piano: both good (depends on your taste)
Electric piano: better in the Motif ES
Organs: better in the Motif ES
Acoustic and electric bass: better in the Motif ES (much greater choice also)
Acoustic guitars: MUCH better in the Tyros 2
Electric guitars: better in the Tyros 2
Woodwinds: MUCH better in the Tyros 2 (the Motif ES saxophones sounds sterile and lifeless, by comparison)
Strings: better in the Tyros 2
Brass: better in the Tyros 2
Accordion: much better in the Tyros 2
Choirs and voices: better in the Motif ES
Pads: better in the Motif ES (more variety as well)
Synth sounds: MUCH better in the Motif ES (of course: it's a full-fledged synth! )
Drums: depends on what you are looking for; both have their strenghts and weaknesses.

So, to summarize, if you are after emulations of acoustic instruments, go for the Tyros 2, but if you are after electronic or synth sounds, go for the Motif ES...
OR, phrased in another way...
it depends on the musical genre you play most.

Hope this helps!

Hey Dreamer
Of course it helps a lot!
Seems like you know very well both machines. Tell me, the bases in Tyros2 are weak also? Well, in Motif ES i donīt lke them too (i used to be a bass player, so Iīm very picky with this) Any way, the Basses in Tyros2 are as weak as in PSR3K?
Piano: It differs much from Motif ES? I liked this piano for live playing. The PSR piano is a joke,is phasey, in mono almost desapears and doesnīt change the color with velocity. (OK, OK, I have a very heavy touch...)
And last but donīt least, percussion: I love all the percussion from motif like brazilian hand drums, congas, and several other gadgets. Some of this are in PSR, but sound so sterile. The drums in PSR are awful and weak.
And as I said, I like the arranger concept: Is easier to layer sounds, the registrations for the songs is very practical. I donīt use auto chords very much, but they are great for study and quick ideas, so Iīm sold with arrangers. I only have experience with Yamaha keyboards, but heard some others: PA1X, SD1 (not bad at all), PA80... Never touched them, but doesnīt ringed as good or practical as Yamaha
I must admit that I prefer better emulations of acoustic sounds. I use a lot of excelent libraries of samples with much sucess, but is almost impossible carry all this stuff in a laptop without a serius crash sometime. So the reliability of a dedicated hardware synth is so important to me.
Please share a little more detail, if you can, please?
And anybody else opinion is very important to me.
Thanks a lot for your Help!
Regards
Jose Pereira
PS To all, please excuse my poor english!!

Hi,
I am in a hurry, but will try to reply now, before going to work:

1- Bass: depends on your taste; if you play a lot of bossa nova or acoustic bass, I find that the T2 acoustic bass is too heavy and invasive. Anyway, there is a lot of choice, and tweaking here and there you can come up with something interesting.
2- Piano: yes, I think it's different and with a warmer sound; much better than the PSR. Of course, the biggest drawback is that it's very difficult to play a piano sound from a non weighed keyboard.
3- Percussion: you won't be disappointed with the T2 percussions; what I find lacking are drumsets for dance, hip hop or techno, but I don't play much of that stuff so...
All in all, if your are after emulations of acoustic sounds (including percussions), go for the Tyros 2 and you won't be disappointed: promise!

Can you expand on what you mean by "phasey"? I demoed a PSR1500 and PSR3000 and the accoustic piano sounds, IMO, like it is put through a Leslie Simulator affect. Is that what you mean by phasey?
Sounds like, WAwaWAwaWAwaWA.

Hi Starkeeper
For "phasey" I mean those instruments that doesnīt sound in stereo, as truly stereo recordings, but using any effect or processing to make "fake stereo" . The Piano in PSR3000 almost disapears when is played in mono. So are several sounds too as strings and brass.
In the Motif ES, the piano retain almost its full sound in mono, at least for my ears.
Thatīs why Iīm asking for the Piano and other sounds in Tyros2. I donīt want to spend so much money and find that is PSR3000 "improved"
I finally downloaded the drum mapping for tyros2 and found is almost similar than PSR (Expeption for "Power Kit" and several cowbells an shakers in the ProLatin Kit)
ARE THE DRUMS IN BOTH (Tyros2 and PSR3K) THE SAME SOUND WISE?
Thanks a lot for your help
Best Regards

No. The Tyros 2 drums are in another league; some kits (the best ones, those labeled "live!") are sampled in real stereo and this makes a huge difference, not only with the 3000. One can argue if Ketron has better drums for Dance, Hip Hop or Techno, but there is no doubt that, if you are into jazz or jazz-latin stuff, the crispness and the clarity of the T2 drums (especially the cymbals) is difficult to beat.
Same thing for the piano: please, try and find a Tyros 2 to demo and you will see your doubts melt like snow in the sun.

Please, I donīt doubt of your words, I really apreciate them!
The thing is Iīm 3 hours by plane and $450 costs to listen and play a Tyros2, if they could be find in Miami, Fl. I live in Venezuela and here there isnīt any Yamaha dealer. I purchased the Motif ES in American Musical Supply and the PSR3k thru other dealer in the USA. I never could play them before hand, just thru demos and word of mouth like now.
I really miss the Motif, but I want an Arranger too. Tyros2 is the obvius choice but itīs a difficult decision, even more when I compare the sound data between Tyros2 and PSR3000 been almost the same, and excuse me, I donīt like PSR3000 sounds. They are so toyish to me, sorry.
Is even a shame that Tyros2 demos doesnīt have more isolated and longer sound demos. The SA voices sound superb, but the rest, I canīt tell for the demos, thatīs why Iīm still bothering to all of you so much. Please, Excuse me!!!
By the way, anybody knows about more demos of tyros2 different than Yamaha sites? I have the video demos from piens (Mrs Volken and the other even better guy. Excelent players, but the sound is awfull, or this is the "awfull true" of Tyros2 ??
Thanks a lot for your comments and help, I really appreciate it!!
Best Regards
Jose Pereira

Take a look at my site www.jmprecords.com still in construction but comments welcome!!
